Sakto ba? okay, i completely got your point. But as what you said, its not black and white, na naa ra xay 2 choices, the latter is the worst!, the former is worse, again not honorable because he's just saving himself and his family from shame di naman xa nag sacrifice for the country, but the honorable thing could had done is to admit mistake and help in the process of cleaning the AFP as I elaborated before. That for me will make him a soldier worthy of the honors people is giving him today.
look at it this way, or mao ni akong point of view. lets say capital punishment is still in practice, im a victim of a heinous crime (maybe rape+attempted murder), as a victim gusto jud nko patyon ang ni victimize nko, as a victim, I tend to generalize all of them death row convicts and preach against them regardless as long as death row cila, but sadly most of these death row convicts including sa nag victimize nko, wala nahatagan ug capital punishment kay puro kaaford ug atty mendoza, fortun etc. now here comes a certain invited guest (lets say silingan ni namo sa una nya tigpalit sa amo tindahan, so i have an idea of the person, and its ok, he's polite, good with the kids, manghatag ug sud-an kung nay occassion, magduwa2x sa iyang mga anak sa gawas sa balay, courteous as a silingan but we dont really know unsa iya negosyo (maybe drugs) kay dako xa balay ug mysterious in some ways but no bells were ringing coz y problema ang neighboorhood)

now continuing, here comes that invited guest of an investigation of a heinous crime (more than 200g shabu case, d pa trial ha) but on the following invitation he killed himself before he could even be a suspect. now for me as a victim of a heinous crime, i would say, ahhh nibayad na daan may nlang kasabot na ciya, so at least, before they could even start a trial, naa nay ni punish sa iyang kaugalingon in contrary to the hundreds in line na bisag convicted na, ni isa wajuy na serve na death penalty, mu plea pajud ug parole, but on the other hand, i know him as a silingan so i am able to get a little idea of how an ok person he was.

now if somebody asks me about that specific case, nya ang nag ask wa kahibaw na silingan mi sa una, but he knows im a victim of a heinous crime, somehow naay predicament akong tubag kay ako victim ko ug heinous crime, pero at the same time kaila pud ko sa katong gi invite for questioning (not suspect kay wpay trial), so most probably akong tubag sa nangutana kay somehow praise sa iyang gbuhat kay nibayad ciya sa iya crime (or supposed) with kaluoy gamay sa iya pamilya, now ang nangutana maglibog na sa akong response na murag nilaban/naluoy na nuon ko sa gahikog (na padung ma suspect) na unta victim gud unta ko of a heinous crime.

can you see where i stand now? i hope you can.. lagpas2x gamay akong analogy, pero murag may pagka ing ana akong feeling towards reyes...

i dont know if honor ang term, pero i think ubos2x ana na naay bahid sa "may-nlang-at-least-gbayran-ug-kinabuhi-luoy-sd-baya-ang-pamilya-sa-biktima" gamay? kung naay term ana, kana cguro.

well...I do get your point, but with all due respect, I just don't agree with it. But atleast we do agree na dili jud xa angay i HONOR, that's what Ive been saying all along.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"
This is the quote i saw after watching Hitler's movie.

I just hope Gen. Reyes reflected on this before he ended up his life (If he is that sincere in serving the country) but sadly the way I see it, he is protecting not the Filipino people but rather to the corrupt officials who contributed greatly to the poverty of millions of our country men. The truth must prevail! and thanks to Heidi Mendoza for taking a brave step.

    I strongly agree with this.

Living life without honor is a tragedy bigger than death itself – Angie Reyes

“Honor, truth, justice. Honor above all else. Pride goes with it, self-respect, sense of legacy. This is very, very important to me. Sometimes, I am accused of being arrogant. I like to have plenty – a healthy sense – of self-esteem. I react to affronts on this.

There are two options available: to stonewall/fight the legal battle, or to come clean and make my own contribution to cleanse the system.

Stonewalling, I am told, would result in a long, protracted legal battle. However, past cases are not being resolved either way, kept in state of limbo. People’s memories are short and all this will eventually fade into public disinterest, and eventually oblivion. So, not to worry.

Coming clean, on the other hand, cannot be done without giving up something. I have decided to come clean, bare my heart and speak the truth. The truth can cut two ways: 1. If you are guiltless, you can embrace the truth and hope that it will protect you; 2. If you are not guiltless, speak the truth and it shall set you free.

I speak the truth not to whistle-blow or to seek neither immunity nor protection nor to escape from any form of liability. As a matter of fact, I speak the truth to accept responsibility for whatever liability I may have.

Honor is above all else. More valuable than freedom or even life itself. Therefore, honor must be guarded/defended with your life.

Living life without honor is a tragedy bigger than death itself.

Stonewalling would mean I would have to go on every day of my life or at least a large part of it under a cloud of public suspicion, at least until the case is resolved. Every day as you continue to live with the lie, you lose a little of your self-respect. And every day, as people look at you, you can read from their minds that they find you dishonorable, and you die a little. So if you stonewall – and you have the connections, resources and power to sustain it, and perhaps the thick face to endure it – that would be the preferred option. I have none of these, and so I choose the path of honor.

My honor has been attacked and damaged. I still have a lot of pride and self-respect, and I’d like to come clean to preserve whatever honor is left.

We see plenty of people walking around who have been clearly disgraced in the eyes of the people, and I do not want to join their ranks.

I think if you want to cleanse the system and for there to be justice, it should be applied equally and well. Our experience has shown that those with position and power, support and connection invariably go scot-free. I don’t have any of these.

It is unfortunate that we have a huge canvass here of which, I admit, I have been a part; unfortunately, people are now inclined to make me the face of that problem for their own various reasons.

When I participated in EDSA II, even then I anticipated that something like this would happen when I made enemies both on a personal and official level. In my long years of service, I knew that I would have to come to terms with this enmity some day.

I might not be guiltless/faultless, but I am not as evil as some would like to portray.

To my friends and those who have known me and believed in me, I honestly believe I did not let you down.

I want to assure the (PMA) cadet corps, current and future, that there are plenty of military professionals who have served and will continue to serve the country well. Do not be disheartened by this turn of events. Yours is a noble profession (of arms), and you should feel no shame. I have tried to live with integrity, loyalty, and courage.

In my 48 years of public service, I have tried to live up to the highest levels of professionalism and integrity. Whether it’s my assignment with the AFP-RSBS or with the Anti-Smuggling Task Force, I never received any offers of bribes; in fact, I returned them. In all my assignments, 39 years in the military and 9 years in four different Cabinet positions, I have never had any favorite supplier. Neither have I ever extorted money nor set any financial precondition for the approval of any contract. I can honestly say that I served honestly and well.

We are now in the situation where my honor and the family name are at stake. My family, my children, my grandchildren could say with a lot of truthfulness and pride that in the family, we value honor and integrity. Strength to live it and the courage to face up to the truth. This is the legacy I would like to leave with them.

Honor, truth, but there must be justice. And justice can be served if laws are applied evenly and well – not favoring the rich and powerful. I hope my case/situation will not be used as something that would bring closure to the issue of military corruption. The fight to reform the system and the entire country must continue; the sad part is that they are selectively targeting individuals and institutions.

I did not invent corruption. I walked into it. Perhaps my first fault was in having accepted aspects of it as a fact of life.

While I am familiar with finance, I must admit I had scant knowledge of military comptrollership. Personally, zero experience. Never been assigned as disbursement officer, etc., no stint. It’s a military field of specialization that I do not have.

No system is perfect. The AFP system needs a lot of systemic solutions…And the same might be true of some other institutions.

Tinyente pa ako, ganyan na ang sistema (i.e., “conversion" system, etc.)… I can perhaps be faulted for presuming regularity in a grossly imperfect system. As CS (chief of staff), a big landscape, presume regularity, convenient to ignore it, accept it as part of the system. It’s easy to say, institute reforms after the problems have erupted.

I joined EDSA II at great risk. Jumped into a void. Coming from a place that was high and comfortable. Without any regard for compensation or recognition or reward. I thought what I did – being loyal to the Flag and putting the national interest above all else – a right, but I was faulted for not being loyal to the commander-in-chief, that I should have stuck with him to the end, however that end might be. I stuck it out with the GMA administration for 9 years, not under the banner of loyalty; I could have deserted GMA, but I did not want to be branded as someone who abandoned his superiors…"

When we participated in many military campaigns, I would like to think that I showed courage…"

corruption is endemic to our culture. in the afp, in the late 1970's, some generals would pocket funds supposedly for soldier boots, uniforms, etc. according to my father who was in the army. but atleast, we are starting to do something about it now.

sayon rman jud sulti-on nato dire gud kay wman ta sa ilang position, sayun rajud, isug kaayo, activista kaayu, kung makasaway murag naagi-an ang naagi-an sa mga senador ug uban officials dire sa nasud, pero kung kamo sd cguro sa ilang sapatos im sure d mu ka dare mosugat sa bawud, thats for certain...

the only thing for us commoners to do is to do good on whatever that we do for whats left of this country, if we are an employee, an entrepreneur, govt official, etc, we should work for the good of the institution that were working for, applying the values that has been embedded to us since we were kids, kung baga in our own little ways nlang, at least its a start kysa mag tuga2x tag saway sa atong mga kadagku-an nya mismo kita sa atong mga isig ka tugkaran d man lang ta kahibalo mu labay ug sakto sa atong basura, muhipos sa atong mga hinubo, d ba?

let them do what they need to do and let us do what is needed for us to do as good citizens of this country. less sa pgsaway more on bayanihan...

Vip, I have high regards on you in this forum because apparently you are one of the intellectuals here. You seem to beat your wisdom with your emotions. I don't know much about Reyes but witch hunt is witch hunt. Reyes cannot defend himself in the Senate and this is very clear.

Whereas, Trillanes (who has a reputation to protect) has been a given a fair day in our justice system. He moved heavens and earth that Judge Pimentel would not issue the verdict before his amnesty -kay nahibawo na siya nga guilty dyud siya of a crime which would make him, in the eyes of the ordinary people, a convicted felon. NOW, did Reyes got the same fair treatment which was extended to him his right for a due process?

And Miriam? I can understand her. She had a son who also committed suicide. The pain of losing a beloved son because of self guilt that she was contributory to it wouldn't surprise me if she acted that way. Yes, she was right in that statement but she forgot that one time in her life she was once a blind lady who holds the scale of justice robbing Reyes of his right to defend himself kay siguro senador na siya.

And I do agree with the priest who said that it was a futile exercise not in the aid of legislation but in the aid of humiliation.
