RP dominates dancesports but bombs out in karateBy Randy Caluag
CEBU CITY—The Philippines dominated the one-day dancesport competition of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games, sweeping both the Standard and Latin American events for a two-gold, two-silver medal haul yesterday at the packed ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.
The Filipinos, showing too much flair and class, proved too dominating on the floor and got the nods of the European adjudicators who are also here for the International Dance Sport Federation Open which
gets underway today at the same venue.
Drawing the loudest cheers were the Cebuano couple Michael Mendoza and Belinda Agora as they sustained with dramatic emphasis their movements in the jive, pasa doble, rumba, cha-cha and samba to win the gold in the Latin American category.
Resplendent in their shiny white, sequin-filled suits, Mendoza and Agora punctuated their performance
by emerging the best in the group jive contest. There was no arguing that the silver would go to the other RP pair in John Errolle Melencio and Dearlie Gerodias.
Placing third were Watchakorn Suasuee Pun and Warapa Jumbala of Thailand.
The Standard event likewise ended on the same note with the RP tandem of Rico Rosima and Filomena Salvador winning the gold and Emmanuel Reyes and Maira Rosete the silver, and Thai partner Pawatpong Ratcha-apai and Chanawan Potimu the bronze.
Slow foxtrot, waltz, tango, Viennese waltz and quickstep were the featured steps in the Standard
category.
Twelve couples, divided into two heats, displayed their wares in the eliminations. Seven made
it to the final showdown of this sport that made its debut in the biennial games, “I’m so overwhelmed. They (athletes) really deserved it,” said Dancesport Council of the Philippines president Becky Garcia. “The people saw how our athletes stood out on the floor. The European judges saw it that way and nobody could really contest that we’re the best in Southeast Asia.”
Over the nearby Mandaue City Sports Center, the RP karate squad took three bronze medals courtesy of the men’s kumite team and kata athletes Stephanie Lim and Noel Espinosa.
The Gretchen Malalad-RP women’s karate team failed to live up to expectation in the women's kumite event and bombed out of contention right after a 2.5-5 loss to defending champion Vietnam.
The men’s kumite squad, composed of Bernardino Chu, Joey Torrebillas and Bong Toribio, won the bronze medal with a 3-0 shutout of Brunei Darrusalam. Chu was unbeaten as the RP team started its bid with a 3-1 win over Thailand, before getting tripped by eventual gold medalist Indonesia. Malaysia settled for the silver.
Lim defeated Indonesia’s Syafrudin and Cambodia’s S. Ratawak to share the women’s kata bronze with Ng Pei Yi of Singapore. Lim Lee of Malaysia and Nguyen Hoang Ngan of Vietnam won the gold and silver, respectively. Espinosa and Le Xuan Hung of Vietnam took the bronze behind eventual winners Ku Jin Keat of Malaysia and silver medalist Faizal Zainuddin of Indonesia.
Malalad, two-time SEAG gold medalist, vowed to make up for the loss as she gets set to defend her crown in the 60-kg individual kumite, one of the eight karate gold medals at stake Monday.
