Buffoonery at the Senate! Too many viruses, our government needs a reformat!

Why am I not surprised with the kind of buffoonery we watched at the senate? Vice-presidential candidate Jun Chipeco turned off the television in disgust!

Of the current 23 members of the Senate, five are from Lakas-CMD, four from Liberal Party, three from PDP-Laban, two from National People’s Coalition (NPC), two from Nacionalista Party (NP), two from Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), two from United Opposition (UNO), one from Kampi, one from People’s Reform Party (PRP), and one independent – a heterogeneous, aberrant body of ten affiliations with incoherent and at times disparate leanings and thinking.

This composition in the Senate contributes to the kind of sick, debased and undisciplined politics in the House of Representatives, which is 53% controlled by Lakas-CMD and Kampi combined, excluding veiled allies. This gives rise to frequent politicking, compromising, and grandstanding that fails to reflect the true interest and will of the Filipino people on matters of legislation.

If elected president, the Kapatiran Party Vice-President and the eight senators with the help of the 49 local elective officials will carry a well-defined, people-centered platform, which cannot be said of the other existing parties. The challenge now for AKP is to step up its thrust to make our "kababayans" aware of the need for principle- and platform-based politics where morality must come first before political expediency, platform and principles must come before the individual person.

Anyone joining AKP, candidate or not, shall be bound by the things the Party stands for. No one shall be above the Party. Personal agenda is anathema. We are promoting the development of responsible and accountable political parties in the Philippines , especially in disciplining our members.

The legislative agenda of AKP includes, among others: the abolition of the pork barrel system and all forms of gambling; strict gun control to restore stiff penalty for illegal possession of firearms and other related measures; the passage of laws banning political family dynasties, right to access to public information, liquidation of cash advances within a reasonable period; the banning of billboards or similar media in public places with names and pictures of the public officials responsible for the project or for any other purpose and a "too all-encompassing, all- out-war" against massive graft and corruption.

WE PRAY FOR A NEW BEGINNING FOR THE FILIPINO PEOPLE! We need your help. We simply must choose the right!

De los Reyes boycotts Quiboloy forum

MANILA, Philippines—Ang Kapatiran Party presidential candidate JC de los Reyes yesterday said he decided to boycott the forum organized by The Kingdom of Jesus Christ group because of his party’s strict adherence to “principled politics.”

“Some presidential candidates went there not because they want Pastor Quiboloy to support their causes or vice versa, but only to get personal endorsements from him,” De los Reyes said in a phone interview from Davao City.

“If it’s an event where presidential candidates would be soliciting votes, then I do not want to go.”

De los Reyes and several Kapatiran candidates flew to Davao to begin a weeklong campaign sortie in Mindanao, which would take them to the cities of Davao, Panabo, Valencia, Marawi, Iligan, Gingoog and Cagayan de Oro, as well as various towns in Davao del Norte, Bukidnon and the Lanao and Misamis provinces.

    ‘I know my shepherd’

The group hopes to solicit endorsements from local Roman Catholic bishops.

De los Reyes, together with party founder Reynaldo Pacheco and president Eric Manalang, paid a courtesy call on Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla shortly after arrival in Davao.

De los Reyes said Capalla asked him if he would attend the Kingdom of Jesus Christ forum.

“I replied, ‘I know my Shepherd and His shepherds know me.’ I’m a Catholic and I’m guided by my faith. I adhere to the Church’s call for principled party politics,” he said.

    PRESS STATEMENT

In a letter dated March 23, 2010 addressed to Miss Maria Ressa, Senior Vice- President of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, Ang Kapatiran Party conveyed its deep concern over two incidents:

    1. The apparent and deliberate exclusion of Ang Kapatiran Party Vice Presidential candidate Atty. Dominador “Jun” Chipeco from the March 21, 2010 ABS-CBN debate of Vice Presidentiables; and

    2. Following that debate, the ensuing news which appeared online at VP bets renew rivalries in TV debate | ABS-CBN News Online Beta which reported that “the only Vice Presidential candidate who did not join the debate was Mr. Edu Manzano”, thus making it appear that Ang Kapatiran Party Vice Presidential candidate Jun Chipeco was invited but did not appear.

Ang Kapatiran reminded Ms. Ressa of the Fair Elections Act (R.A. 9006) which commands that:

“All members of media, television, radio or print, shall scrupulously report and interpret the news, taking care not to suppress essential facts nor to distort the truth by omission or improper emphasis. They shall recognize the duty to air the other side and the duty to correct substantive errors promptly.”

We wish to state that more than just an affront against the integrity of Ang Kapatiran—a political party duly accredited by the Commission on Elections and authorized by law to field candidates for May 2010—the exclusion and the untruthful news about Atty. Jun Chipeco’s implied “participation” in the debate obliges us to consider the grave social responsibility of an institution that controls the instruments of social communication.

Today’s ongoing electoral process raises a stronger call for true media responsibility, where the public demands full information about issues and events, office holders and candidates for office, and every aspect of political information. This call to broadcast media enables it to contribute to the formation of sound public opinion and vibrant debates. “In this way, media become important instruments of accountability, turning the spotlight on incompetence, corruption, and abuses of trust, while also calling attention to instances of competence, public-spiritedness, and devotion to duty. “(Ethics in Communication, The Holy See)

That is why media enjoys freedom of the press.

But excluding other political parties and their platforms and ideals from the marketplace is an abuse of that freedom. It is a betrayal of the trust of the public that has the right to be informed by media of the spectrum of ideals held and posited by the varied political parties that are offering solutions to the people.

This is not a new ethic. These are established principles in responsible social communication. And in the context of the current electoral process, this ethic assumes public interest. Media’s protected prerogatives are not possessed for media’s interests. These are reposed for public interest, for responsible media is the cornerstone of constitutional democracy and free society.

In that letter of March 23, Ang Kapatiran presented the following points of redress for the continued discrimination against the Party, a bias that is causing serious damage to the positive public image it has generated in the public eye:

1st. That ABS-CBN publicly rectify the exclusion of Atty. Jun Chipeco from the debate; and

2nd. The public correction of the false news report or press release that implies the presence of Mr. Jun Chipeco in the debate.

Three days after ANC received our letter, we still have to see a response.

In closing, it is also rightful to commend the professionalism of media anchors like Ms. Pia Hontiveros, Ms. Karen Davila and Mr. Anthony Taberna, even as Ang Kapatiran Party expresses its high expectations of broadcast media to be responsible agents in forging sound public opinion during this critical time of our political history.
