    I think they mean less DOF, if more DOF you will get a sharper & more focused background which would make the main subject standout less. Opening up the aperture or using a long tele will make a thinner or lesser DOF.

    That's how I interpreted the suggestion. More depth-of-field (DOF) will cause the main subject to stand out less from his background which i think would make the picture cluttered. Less DOF would make a better picture as it would provide more isolation. The eyes would still be sharp if the focus was set on one of them, anyway, which should be SOP when taking portraiture, even in street photography. Just my two cents.

    Go wide or normal. Street Photography, obviously you need to include the scene but not necessarily focusing them. People's action is important too.

    Kalandrakas, It would be appropriate for me to say "narrow/er DOF" or "wider DOF"... my bad.
    In the image above I wanted to say "narrower DOF". Maybe ako ray nalibug Matsalam.
