    Flora #77: Nesaea sp.

Common Name: Nesaea crassicaulis, Nesaea pedicellata
Scientific Name: Nesaea crassicaulis, Nesaea pedicellata
Local Name: Nesaea crassicaulis, Nesaea pedicellata
    Origin: Africa
    Native to Philippines (Y/N): N
Light Level: High to Very High
    CO2 Requirement (Y/N): Y
    Fertilizer Requirement (Y/N): Y
    Life Span:
    Freshwater/Brackish/Marine: Freshwater
    Water pH: 5.5 - 8.5
    Water Hardness:
    Common Illness/Problems:
    Growth: Medium to Fast
    Length/Size: 20 - 40 + cm
    Difficulty: Medium to Hard
    Tank Position: Mid-ground to Background
    Water Current/Movement Issues:
    General Description:
Nesaea crassicaulis is a beautiful and highly recommended aquarium plant, although it has high demands for light. It has red-brown, cognac-coloured leaves. Grows best in soft and slightly acidic water. Make sure the lower leaves get suffi cient light, otherwise they will die off. This plant is similar to Ammannia-species and is often mistaken for them. But in the aquarium it can be recognised by its yellow-green stems. Easy to propagate by side shoots or cuttings, which can be cut off and planted in the bottom.
Nesaea pedicellata is an attractive, decorative and easy stem plant. Leaf colours range from green to yellow and orange and reddish shades depending on growth conditions in the aquarium. The stems keep their intense red colouring, something that can also be seen when the plant is grown in a swamp. Compared with Nesaea crassicaulis, Nesaea pedicellata has narrower leaves and its colours are warmer. We recommend planting Nesaea in the mid-ground of the aquarium as a contrast to the tall green background plants. Fertilizer capsules should be used to strengthen the plant and emphasise its colours.

    Other Important Information:
A good source of iron will intensify the color of the leaves.

    Growth: Medium
    Length/Size: 20 - 80 + cm
    Difficulty: Medium
    Tank Position: Mid-ground to Background
    Water Current/Movement Issues:
    General Description:
A beautiful and very varied species with leaves of green to red-brown and varying numbers of purple spots. Before forming fl oating leaves Nymphaea lotus (zenkeri) forms many underwater leaves. If you don’t want floating leaves, prune the roots and leaves. The beautiful, aromatic fl owers can be fully appreciated in open aquariums. A nutritious bottom encourages growth. Often available in a red and a green variety. Recommended as a solitary plant for large aquariums.
    Other Important Information:
A good source of iron will intensify the color of the leaves.

    Water Current/Movement Issues:
    General Description:
Unique stem plant with "needle-shaped" leaves. Prefers soft, acidic water but is adaptable to hard water, as well. Meristem seems to suffer when there is an iron deficiency. Loves lots of light and CO2. Propagation by budding stems.

Fauna # 23: black neon tetra

    Common Name: black neon tetra
    Scientific Name: Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi
    Local Name: black neon tetra
Origin: native to the Paraguay basin of southern Brazil.
    Life Span: 3 - 5 years
Temperament: Very peaceful and best kept in a small school (shoal) of 6 or more.
Tank Compatibility Issue (for both Flora and Fauna): Their tank should contain live plants, a darker substrate and open water for swimming. Black neons should be kept in groups of at least 4-6 black neon tetras.
    Freshwater/Brackish/Marine: Freshwater
    Water pH: 5.5 - 7.0
Water Hardness: soft, slightly acidic and aged
    Schooling/Non-schooling: Schooling
Common Illness/Problems: Ammonia Poisoning, Ich, Fin Rot, Nitrite/Nitrate Poisoning
    Growth: Fast
    Length/Size: 4 cm(1.5 in)
    Difficulty: Medium
    Water Current/Movement Issues:
Description:This species is of typical elongated tetra appearance; it is of plain basic coloration but with two distinct, adjacent longitudinal stripes, white above black. The eye has two thin but distinctive color bands across the top, red above yellow. It grows to a maximum overall length of approximately 4 cm (1.5 in). Despite its common name, it does not particularly resemble the neon tetra, which belongs to a different genus. The fish's natural diet consist of small invertebrates and plants. H. herbertaxelrodi is commonly kept as an aquarium fish by hobbyists. The black neon tetra is sometimes called the black tetra, but that name more properly refers to a different species, Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. The most noticeable characteristic of the Black neon is the two color band that extends from the base of the caudal fin all the way to the edge of the gill cover. The upper part of this band is a shimmering pale green to white, while the lower part is a broad jet black stripe that if you look close is edged in silver. The fins are clear with a yellowed tinge. The eyes are large and the Iris is topped with a bright red semi circle.
    Other Important Information:
Not one of the easiet fish to breed at home, the female Black neon is rounder and plumper than the male. When she is ready to breed you will see a increase in her girth. They are a typical Egg scatterer, requiring soft, acidic and very clean water. Failures in breeding are in most cases due to unsuitable water conditions. To spawn them, you will need a small tank placed in a dark spot as the eggs seem to be light sensitive, a 2 inch layer of half inch rock and some bunches of fine textured live plants like Myriophyllium are suitable as the spawning medium. Place the pair in the spawning tank with a temperature of 75°F, feed well for a few days and then raise the tank temperature to around 80°F. They usually spawn early in the morning. The clear eggs are laid among the plants and barely stick to them. The parents should be removed after spawning as they are egg eaters. In 22 to 26 hours the eggs hatch. The fry are very hard to spot, but appear 3-4 days later at which time they are free swimming and will need to be fed infusoria or baby brine shrimp. A perfect community fish, the black neon is peaceful and prefers to kept in schools. A smaller tank is all that is needed to keep them. The standard 20 gallon or smaller will be fine. Slightly more demanding than the typical Characin the black neon should have clear water, that is soft, slightly acidic and aged. The tank should have open space for swimming and dense areas of planting. The addition of driftwood will complete the tank. Feeding is not a problem as they will accept all types of flake food and will relish the addition of some live food like Daphnia or small worms. They are a very peaceful little fish. Keep them in a small school and try not to keep them with larger fish that may be tempted to eat them, such asAngelfish

Grows well in moderately hard water, but as with most plants, this plant also does very well in soft water. It will also form a very thick bush and can be trained to form a lower growing carpet in the right conditions and with weekly trimming.
