MANILA, Philippines—The youngest and popular daughter of the late senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was angered over the release of her father's convicted murderers, as she appealed to the public not to forget his sacrifice to restore democracy.
"My dad was killed by those men who were freed today," a teary-eyed Kris Aquino said Wednesday in ABS-CBN’s "Showbiz News Ngayon," an entertainment-oriented daily news program she hosts.
The ten convicts—Rogelio Moreno, Ruben Aquino, Arnulfo Artates, Romeo Bautista, Jesus Castro, Arnulfo De Mesa, Rodolfo Desolong, Claro Lat, Ernesto Mateo and Filomeno Miranda—stepped out of the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City on Wednesday as part of an executive clemency granted by President Macapagal-Arroyo on March 2. They were the remaining convicts out of the 16 military men the Sandiganbayan court found guilty on September 28, 1990 for the murders of Aquino and Rolando Galman, who the Marcos administration pinpointed as the gunman communists hired to carry out the murder. Those who comprise the other six convicts have either died in prison or were pardoned by previous administrations.
These men were part of an escort contingent that led Aquino out of the China Airlines plane that took him back to the Philippines after years of exile in the United States on August 21, 1983. He was shot dead on his way down to the tarmac of the Manila International Airport. Moreno was the identified gunman.
They also killed Galman in the operation.
Aquino’s youngest child said she had wanted to keep mum on the issue and let her brother, Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, speak for the family. But watching the freed convicts on newscasts lament losing years of their lives while in detention at the Muntinlupa prison made her break her silence.
"Gusto kong mapaalala po sa inyong lahat na kung sila matagal silang nahiwalay sa pamilya nila, magmula August 21,1983 ako ba at mga kapatid ko may tatay ba kaming nayakap? [I just want to remind everyone that if they had been separated for a long time from their families since August 21, 1983, have I and my siblings embraced a father?]," the TV host-actress said.

"My mom (former president Corazon Aquino) as everybody knows has cancer. Sa lahat ng paghihirap na pinagdaadaanan ng mommy ko, meron ba siyang asawa na kahawak kamay niya ngayon at puwedeng nagbibigay suporta sa kaniya? Wala ‘di ba? [After all the suffering my mom went through, does she have a husband to hold hands with and offer support? None.]" she added.
Aquino’s death spurred the popular People Power revolt that catapulted his widow to the presidency.
"Nung presidente ang nanay ko, hindi po kami naningil ng buhay kapalit ng buhay ng daddy ko, [When my mother became president, we did not avenge my father’s death by taking another life]," the actress also said, adding that she feels bad because it appeared the country has forgotten his father's martyrdom.
Aquino said the pardoned convicts should not fool the public by claiming their innocence. They were still convicted of killing her father, even if they claim they just “followed orders,” she said.
"Pinatay nila si Ninoy Aquino...hindi ko mapapatawad ang sarili ko bilang anak ni Ninoy Aquino kung hindi ako magsasalita, [They killed Ninoy Aquino…As his daughter, I won’t forgive myself if I don’t speak]," she added.

MANILA, Philippines—At the 7th Gawad Tanglaw, Best Actress co-winner Judy Ann Santos went up the stage twice—the second time, to accept the Best Film honor (for “Ploning”) and to correct herself.
“I earlier said the awards’ venue is a hospital,” she told Inquirer Entertainment in an exclusive interview after the ceremony on Monday. “Actually, it’s a university. That’s why this award is special because it’s given by teachers. Nakaka-inspire.”
It’s also memorable because it’s her first for “Ploning” and she is sharing it with screen legend Anita Linda (for “Adela”), she said.
To be fair to Judai, there’s also a hospital in the Gawad Tanglaw venue, the University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta.
She said the lapse may have also been committed because she has been spending a lot of time in hospitals lately.
The actress plays a nurse in her latest ABS-CBN series “Habang May Buhay,” that’s why.
“We’ve finished a week’s worth of episodes. Taping is going smoothly,” she related.
    ‘Narserye’
She originally envisioned the soap, dubbed a narserye, as a local version of “Grey’s Anatomy.”
“I know that would be difficult to do because of the technical requirements,” she admitted. “But the show’s story has become more meaningful because it also tackles a mother-daughter relationship.”
Fellow award-winning actress Gina Alajar plays Judai’s mom.
“But it’s still informative,” she said of the new show. “We want viewers to learn about health issues. We have doctors and nurses as consultants because our goal is to make the soap as realistic as possible.”
Judai has learned a lot on the set, too. “It’s like going to nursing school,” she quipped. “I’ve also completed my immunization (requirements). Every time there’s a taping, nagpapabakuna ako (I get inoculated)!”
    Big day plans
Health-wise, it seems that she’s all set to start a family with fiancé Ryan Agoncillo.
“Everyone thinks we are keeping details of our (forthcoming) wedding a secret,” she said. “Not really. It’s just that it’s very difficult to plan. We have a lot of things to do pa.”
Are they hiring a wedding planner?
“We are also discussing that,” she said. “We are still choosing the date. We are consulting a feng shui master.”
So when is the big day?
“It can happen next week; it can happen next month. But it will definitely happen,” she said.
Another certainty is that they’ve found their conjugal home in the South.
“That’s our priority now,” she said. “We are fixing the house. Kailangan maaliwalas (well-ventilated) at child-proof. For our daughter Yohan.”

    Another victory for Cesar

    By Dolly Anne Carvajal

MANILA, Philippines—I had a blast with my fave amigo Cesar Montano at his resto Bellisimo. We had an impromptu victory party after we both won at the 7th Gawad Tanglaw. Buboy was named Best Game Show Host for “Singing Bee” (which won Best Game Show) while I bagged the Best Entertainment Columnist award for the second time around.

I am eternally grateful to the esteemed members of Gawad Tanglaw for the recognition. Buboy is elated that he won. “Nakakatuwa kasi experimental lang na nag game show host ako,” he said. “Di ko akalain na mananalo pa ko as best host.”

The cool staff of his show and my “gay BF” Nelson Canlas joined the celebration. We were ribbing Buboy about how funny he looked in his earlier films like “Golden Buddha” so he should ban all VCD copies of those movies. “Nagulat ako when a fan gave me a VCD compilation of all my films,” he said. “So kahit pirated, tinanggap ko na rin (laughs). But I don’t support piracy.”

He showed me a video of a Skittles TV ad in the States which struck his attention during his recent trip. “I almost fell off my seat when I first saw this ad. Ka-aliw kasi may Pinoy na nag-Tagalog sa ad.”
Buboy also told me about a soft drink ad which he saw in Italy that blew him away. “Galing ng concept! A little boy couldn’t reach the button of his fave drink in the vendo machine so he pushed the button of the other drink until he had enough cans to step on and reach for his fave drink.” A sought-after endorser like Buboy ought to direct a TV ad soon since he really has an eye for detail.
He was on his fifth day of antibiotics for his tooth so Buboy said he could not drink wine yet. But after much prodding, he gave in and proposed a toast for more success and lasting friendship.
We are planning to go to his hometown Bohol on Holy Week and continue the outreach program for less fortunate kids in various towns of the province which he started with his wife Sunshine. The highlight of the night was when we took turns in asking Buboy “tough 10” questions. His revealing answers made us all scream with delight.

Unfortunately, it’s all off-the-record. I went home feeling happy inside. Not only do I have a Best Columnist award but also the best guy friend in Buboy. The more I know him, the luckier I feel!

    Students’ choice

ABS-CBN dominated the 5th UST Student’s Choice Awards, spearheaded by the Office of the Secretary General of the University of Santo Tomas. The Kapamilya network bagged 18 out of the 25 awards. Some of the winners are: Anne Curtis, Best Actress for “Dyosa”; John Lloyd Cruz, Best Actor for “I Love Betty La Fea”; Sarah Geronimo, Most Popular Local Music Video Performer; Aga Muhlach’s “That’s My Doc,” Best Sitcom; “Boy and Kris,” Most Popular Talk Variety Program; “The Buzz,” Most Popular Entertainment News Program, “ASAP ’08” for Most Popular Variety Program. With the Thomasians’ recognition, tumaas all the more ang Kapamilya network’s popularity.

    Random notes on the Oscars
    By Baby K. Jimenez, L.A. Correspondent Updated March 05, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Towards 3:50 p.m., Charo now on the red with Greg Robertson, Disney International Associate head of Asia Pacific distribution. Disney owns ABC, the network that carried the awards night and which was beamed to abs-cbn for Philippine viewing. No cameras were allowed inside the Kodak Theatre.

Charo was overwhelmed when someone approached her “Hello I am Sam Kori George and I must tell you — you are wearing the best gown tonight! I am Sam Kori George who won the ‘Oscars Designer Challenge’ (He did the outfits for the trophy girls). Where are you from?” Charo introduced herself and Sam told her he’s based in Chicago. Later Sam and Charo found themselves in the same section and Sam said, ”See, we’re even seated together!” He handed Charo a card “Just in case.” A lot of other guests complimented her, “What a beautiful gown,” “So lovely.”

“They are very appreciative,” Charo remarked.
“It is the production person in you that comes out. Like how could they mount such a presentation like this with so much precision and order? I am glad we sat in the mezzanine, (Row D, Left Section, Seat 1). I could see the whole stage, the setting and changes in its entirety, it’s like watching Broadway. And that Hugh Jackman, he’s the sexiest man alive!”

Charo was escorted by Jose Ramon “Monchet” Olives based in Burlingame. He is the executive head of the cable channels and print media group of abs-cbn in Burlingame.
“I was telling my family — Cesar, the kids and Rina (her stepdaughter who traveled with her) and my friends in the office, don’t blink. True enough, as Amy Adams (the Best Supporting Actress contender from Doubt) was being interviewed on the E Channel, I was there right behind her. They did an exact playback on this inside the theater before the show started and I saw myself.”
“Right after we dropped by at the Governors’ Ball — which was also held at the Kodak, we went out waiting for our limo and there he was standing near us, Kevin Kline with his wife Phoebe Gates. So we asked, “Can we have a photo with you?” I am from the Philippines.”
On Meryl Streep, “She’s very grounded... her aura — wow..”
On Anthony Hopkins, “commanding presence, like Sean Connery”
Brad Pitt? “Benjamin Button! He’s no longer Legends of the Fall. He has metamorphosed. Benjamin Button himself. And Angelina Jolie? Stunning!”
I was very moved when they showed the former Oscar awardees all together on the stage paying tribute to the nominees.
“I also saw the young pair from High School Musical Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron. Vanessa is so pretty. She’s half-Pinay, very charming!”
Yes, there was no traffic from Beverly Hilton to Kodak Theater — all of 5.45 miles, and about 20 minutes sans traffic. Streets were closed temporarily as all roads led to Oscars.
“When I got off the limo and saw the cordoned off area, security was tight and when I saw the Oscars, I said, This is it. This really is it. I am here. I am actually here... My feelings? It’s different for example if you are walking on the red carpet for the very first time — like seeing Ronnie Poe for the first time in your life and you stare with your eyes and mouth wide open and say, aaaah...But if you have been in the movies for a long time and you’ve done it often, you know you are with human beings. You know it is their job, acting is their profession.”
Then, which Charo walked on the red carpet? The actress, the producer or the executive?
“All of the above. You know, when I was in the theater watching the show, I felt I wanted to go back to acting... Oh... Gabby (Lopez, ABS-CBN chairman and CEO) might not want to hear this (laughter). Maybe after I retire from my current task. I can play mother roles, grandma characters, mistresses!!!” (more laughter).
After the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Hollywood people are saying this might start a trend and would inspire co-production ventures with third world countries.
    Is Star Cinema ready?
“Yes, it is inspiring and we are planning right now.”
Who knows, next time Charo makes an appearance at the Oscars, it could be for a walk on the stage to claim a grand prize.
