Yep It would be alright... If there won't be a male, the females would have a royal rumble to determine the top biatch and establish a pecking order but once all the fuss is over, peace would settle in your community tank...
I would advise though not to put a Halfmoon male since their long finnage would be a target for mischeivous females who couldn't resist giving the old boy a nip in his ass... LOL! I wish our girls would be that aggresive hehehe...^^

what if its a planted tank. would it be ok to mix them with a long-tailed male?

Crowntail, Plakat, Veiltail... Whatever suites your fancy...
They would look pretty damn sweet in your planted bai...^^
All male Bettas have long tails excluding the Plakat... Halfmoons just have his in excess...
