Microsoft: Gears of War 3 Biggest Game of the Year So Far

Gears of War 3 said this week that the third iteration in its franchise has sold three million copies, making it the biggest game of the year so far.

"Gears of War was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the platform ever since," said Microsoft Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer, in a statement. "Gears of War 3 kicked off the biggest holiday in Xbox history with a bang last week, setting the standard for the kinds of amazing, action-packed experiences gamers should expect on Xbox 360 this year."

The one-week tally is impressive, although one of its top rivals in the games space, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, is not far off. So far, Gears of War 3 is exclusive to the Xbox 360 platform, while rivals like Call of Duty were written for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, among others.

In addition, that tally might have been assisted by the fact that it racked up over a million preorders.

Gears of War 3 has enjoyed strong reviews, with a score of 91 on Metacritic, winning scores of 100 on several publications.

The Games Of Fall 2011 - October

It seems like as the year begins to come to a close, we always find ourselves thinking, “How are we going to afford all the games coming out this Fall?" In the end, it (mostly) seems to turn out alright, and often some of the big hitters are even delayed into the following year.

That doesn't appear to be the case this year. With enough huge titles launching across all platforms in the next 3 months, we haven't seen such a filled year like this in a long time (2004 rings a bell!)

Over the next 3 months, we will be taking a closer look at some of the big hitters that will be on retail shelves this Fall. After a short description, we will give the game a hype rating – High, Medium, and Low. Finally, we will award one of the monthly releases the title of “Most Hyped Game of the Month." We hope that these articles will help gamers keep track of the coming onslaught of titles this year.

These lists don't even consider games that are XBLA-exclusive, and it's already looking to be a season that will hurt every gamer's wallets. This month's focus is the games of October 2011.
