US Navy suppercarrier to visit Manila

MANILA, Philippines - One of the US Navy's largest aircraft carriers is scheduled to arrive in Manila next week.

In a press statement, the US Embassy in Manila said the nuclear-powered USS George Washington will visit the Philippines on October 24, Wednesday, "for a goodwill visit that will further enhance the strong historic ties between the United States and the Republic of the Philippines."

It said the U.S. and Philippine Navy counterparts will conduct community relations projects and professional exchanges.

The American nuclear-powered super carrier is the fourth United States Navy ship to be named after George Washington, the first President of the United States.

Commissioned on July 4, 1992, the aircraft carrier can accommodate approximately 80 aircraft, around 6,250 crew members, and with a flight deck of 4.5 acres (18,000 mē) in size.

The US aircraft carrier will be welcomed by the Philippine Navy and will be escorted to another point in Manila Bay. With a report from Philippine Information Agency

They usually don't engage in direct combat, but sometimes they help defuse bombs and recover casualties.

There are rumors that there are also American CIA assassins working with the approval of the Philippine national government to hunt Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah leaders. Both organizations are tied to al Qaeda and the Taliban, the US's major enemies in the War on Terror.

The US also provides equipment to the AFP, including helicopters, M-16 automatic rifles, and unmanned surveillance airplanes.

And every year, thousands of US troops come from Hawaii and Okinawa to do joint training exercises with the AFP in what is called the "Balikatan" exercises. These exercises include large humanitarian projects like building homes and infrastructure in Bangsamoro (also known as the ARMM).

The US's stated military policy in the Philippines is to increase the capacity of the AFP to carry out counterterror operations, and to help the Philippine national government win the hearts and minds of the Filipino people. All US military activity in the Philippines is of course approved by the Philippine national government. In fact, the US is required by treaty to help.

I'm wondering what you think of US military activity there. Is it too much? Too little? Should the United States leave the Philippines alone? Do you feel the US forces there have colonial intentions?

It's US Imperialism not Colonialism. They are not directing retirees to come retire and populate this place. The Philippines would be better off on their own and learning adapting and developing their own means to handle their own security issues themselves rather than rely on the US.
