i think there not using microscope , but a magnifier, and its harder to retouch a negative because the colors are inverted... and usually there using medium or large format cameras and not 35mm( i suspect coz i've never tried my pictures takin by this studios)... i don't know the process though...

for me whatever you do to the photograph/pic/jpeg/raw is still photography as long as you are the one taking the shot and you are happy with the end product (its a bonus if other people are happy with it).

Artists satisfy themselves 1st before others.

There are lots of types/kinds and categories of photography... If you are doing the memory keepsake type then photoshpping your kid into smiling even if he is frowning at the moment you took the shot.. then what does that prove? If you are taking photos of your zits to have a documented file of how you lose them.. and you are photoshopping your face to smoothen it out... now what does that prove?... same goes for Photojournalism.. its purpose is for documentation and altering photographs for documentation is purely pointless.

Another type is Art.. you can do whatever you want with your photograph as long as it expresses what you want it to express... alter it as much as you want until you are satisfied.

What are we doing with light modifiers, studio strobes, external flashes, whale tails, umbrellas, reflectors, lightspheres, stofen omnibounce diffusers and gels if we dont want to stain pictures with unauthenticity in the 1st place? As I said its the final product that count...

If you are doing it for yourself.. then satisfy yourself
If you are doing it for a client then .. by god! satisfy your client and dont tell them you left that BIG PIMPLE on the Mayor's face because you are a purist and dont want to edit!
If you are taking pictures for your family then a word of advice.. dont photoshop that head of your wife into relpacing it with paris hilton's head... or your ahem.. 2nd head might be cut off before you wake up...

to sum these all up.. your photography is yours and nobody else's... so its up to you what you do with it...
