@jordinho: (OT) I think the portraits that must be posted here should have undergone a 'creative' process, which I assume is a deliberate attempt to be 'artistic'. In other words, slow 'portraits.'
Example, if I shoot a farmer actually doing farming, that's probably as 'defined' here a snapshot. I'd call it a part of documentary if I were to follow the farmer's waking hours until he retires for the day and ask him to pretend I'm not there. However, if I ask the same farmer to pose with his carabao and use strobe chuva, then that is a 'portrait.' I prefer the former than the latter.
I suggest you just shoot whatever is fun for you. If you really want to learn how to take formal portraits, there are many books and schools although you may find that they too have different thoughts on the matter. Eventually, you'll just settle for one or two.
I agree critiques help one improve but they should be taken with a grain of salt because if you do follow the suggestions and post the photo in another forum, you may get another set of critique. In other words, you cannot please everyone so I suggest you just please yourself first and foremost unless you're entering a photo contest or photography is your bread and butter. Kung imo ra ni hobby, why add stress?
cm, thanks. i thought i was taking a candid portrait and curious lang ko kung unsa i comment ni "mama pro"? 90% of the time ako ra mga kids akong picturan, lisod kaau i direct LOL. i'm with you sa imong example id rather do the former as well. and about the books/schools big nono, nananaw mi sa dvd ni zack arias halfway sa first dvd nag hagok nako hahahaha but anyways thanks again and appreciate the explanation and suggestions
@jordinho: Then you can probably imagine the challenge of shooting babies and toddlers for commercial purposes Ugh, probably just like shooting Weiner dogs and other kiti kiti dogs. I'm not saying you shouldn't get critiques ha (basin ma-misinterpret ko) but only ask for them when you need to and I highly recommend you ask people whose photos you admire. You might want to try your luck at photoforum.ru. Nag-buto buto ako dughan ani panahona.
Some examples of great portraits na wala pa nako na-achieve personally

A photographer friend of mine, Greg (American), told me that there's no right way to photography but there are many ways to do it wrong. Libog ko sa answer niya until I realize the paradox. It's a matter of perceived truth. There are perceived truths that are accepted by the majority of photographers and then there are your own truths. This is the reason why I'm now shifting my attention to film photography because honestly, I'm getting tired of seeing 'technically correct' photos or by-the-book photos kay ni-ingo man si Mr. this and Mr. that ni ing-ani-on nako dapat kuha litrato. It's also the reason why I shun clubs. I see so many clubs who have a flickr account and if I don't look at the name of the account owner, the photos look the same to me kay sa amo club, mao ni gitudlo, si Master so-and-so mao man gisulti sa ko. No thanks.
pa c&c po...and tell me if portrait ni xa...tnx ^^
a lil edit: Filter - noise reduction - sharpen - levels - brightness and contrast ^^
