Thread: Dream Theater

Portnoy and Petrucci? Plus their music genre?

    Why not?

I also love dream theater.. but they shine on the kevin moore era.....

derek sherinian was also good...... but the jordan rudess era sucks big time....... for me lang kay over technical na kaayo ang DT...

    they lost their edge...

.. depechebox ... when jordan became an official member of DT, they soared to new heights, Petrucci now has a shredding partner. How can you say that Jordan is purely technical, he has some "emotional input" to DT's music. And what " edge " are you talking about here ?? DT's edge is their technicality. They got it more when jordan came onboard. as you can see, every album has a different direction than the rest.

.. with regards to Labrie's vocals, his best performance for me is when he sang the KILLING HAND on that live audio album, i forgot the name of the album though. And as you guys might have noticed, right now, during live, his voice is fed unto a distortion or some kind of vocal effects. C'mon, when you get older your vocal chords aint that flexible anymore.

    Well said fingolfin

Petrucci now has a one-off duo partner. DT's edge has good blend to jordans.

preference ra na nako.. im really into progressive rock music..

I don't think progressive rock is more on technicalities... thats why i prefer fates warning or queensryche over dream theater any day...

yep technically they are way better in the jordan rudess era.. but musically... mas nindot gyud ang kevin moore era.........

nothing beats their "images and words" and their "awake" album.....

Opeth is even way better than DT now adays.. even mike portnoy admits that.. and I dont think Opeth is really that techy......

the good thing about kevin is that he never really focus on the technical side, he is more on the mellody and the arrangements of the song or what ever...

that is one of the reasons why he quit.. bec. of musical preferences......

have you guys heard of kevin moores chroma key?.. and if you do you'll definitely know what i mean....

though he may not be as good as jordan when comes to techinicallity but he is also a very good keyboardist.....

sorry guys but that is just my opinion...

I honestly say that DT with jordan is more into technicality and with kevin, pure progressive rock music.

But still, DT sounds better with jordan than kevin.

The only weakness of Dream Theater is the lyrics. They should allow John Myung to write songs. Enough of the Petrucci-Portnoy collaboration

Mao bah ang lyrics? I thought it was the vocals. hehehe. I really like the 80's voice like james' He reminds me of John Sclith (petra) and Michael Sweet (stryper), I like his classical training, range and quality. The thing is it is stucked in that decade. It seems he lacks the versatility and reinventing himself to be significant today.

    This is just my thoughts.

I like John myung he's seems to be so under rated but he's really very good.
