My Pilgrimage to the Miraculous Image of San Francisco Javier, Maasin City, Leyte.
I've always heard about this place, but I never get a chance to visit it. Not until I finally decided to give it a shot. It's not an easy place to reach. It's situated on top of one of the highest peaks near Maasin City, Leyte. There are no proper roads for 4 wheeled vehicles, so its a hike. Although you may reach the top via "habal2x", but this is a pilgrimage for me. So walking is the best option as part of the sacrifice.
Points of interest
- Wide span of landscape. On days with better weather, the sunrise and sunset views from the top are spectacular. With an overlooking view of the entire Maasin City.
- Portraits - countryside folk
- Macro photography - flowers and insects
- Bird Watching
And if you're doing this as a pilgrimage, the feeling of fulfillment.
Photos:
The path is not safe, if you don't plant your foot properly, you could trip and break an ankle. (ma takilpo bah!)
A view of the area below. Sayang it was an overcast day. But during summer, the view of the sunrise is breath taking.
Some occasional groups of birds doing a flyby. Sorry, using a cheapo lens kit lang po.
After almost an hour of hiking the steep path, I began to have doubts if I can really make it to the top. Just when part of me was telling me to give up, we encountered this old man doing the pilgrimage too. He started around 1AM, he started his climb earlier so he can make it back with the sun still up. I couldn't give up! No way!
A panoramic view of the entire landscape. If this was primarily a photo trip, I would've hiked that hill in front of me to get a better view. But I wanted to make it back by lunch time, so no time to waste. Click photo to enlarge.
Finally! A cemented pathway!
And its very steep!!!
My wife enjoying the view. She's sitting at the edge of the cliff actually.
All the people here have agreed that it is spelled MENIRAL water.
Seeing the goal in sight is a relief. I'm almost out of water already!
Touch down! I would've planted an IPC flag if this area was uninhabited
The chapel
All visitors are blessed with the touch of the image of San Francisco Javier.
The goal of the pilgrimage...
Ahhhh.. probinsyang snacks... royal true orange ug init pa na bibingka!
Going down was as hard as going up because you have to hold back your entire weight against the law of gravity. Samoka ani nga law oi, ipa ammend ni beh.I can't help but think how are those old people gonna come back down?!?!?
The answer came a few minutes later...... via "habal2x". Dammit... and we walked all the way back!
There you go... my personal pilgrimage part 1 of 3. Of 3? Well, I climbed 2 more shrines in the next few days...
