How did I know? Thank you for asking and I'm very willing to share my experience and how I came to know and gained my own testimony.
First of all, I should say that it is everyone's responsibility to search for the truth. For me, searching for the truth means to be unbiased, neutral, honest - that you are really seeking for the truth, and UNINFLUENCED - meaning that we should not believe just because we are told to believe. We should be critical minded and ask questions.
My parents were LDS since I was born. I grew up in the church. But it doesn't mean that I immediately accepted what was taught to me. Partly also because I went to a Catholic school. I also had some friends who were Baptists, Born Again, Seventh-Day Adventists, etc...
Specially in college I came across a lot of critical minded professors who question the existence of God. I have also heard and read tremendous amount of anti-mormon literature and attacks.
In other words, I doubted. I doubted that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. That the Book of Mormon could just be his own work and he fooled us. That the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is nothing but just another religious denomination.
So what did I do? I searched for more answers about Joseph Smith. I searched about his history and what he's done. Because for me he is the key to my questions. If I would know to myself that he is a fraud then of course the LDS church would then be a fraud. But if I know that he is a true prophet of God then I would know that the Book of Mormon which he claimed to translate from ancient records, the Doctrine & Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the LDS church is true and holds the power and authority from God to perform the ordinances.
So I read about his history and the LDS church's history. I read as many anti-mormon literature I can get. So I gathered many positive things about Joseph Smith and I've also gathered many negative things about him. That includes accusations and lawsuits filed against him. But still I can't come to a conclusion whether he is a fraud or not because for me it seemed to balance out. He's had many negative writings about him but he's also had so much positive writings about him. Who wrote what? Of course, the negative writings came from other churches attacking him. The positive ones came from writers from the LDS church. But to be honest each negative thing I read about Joseph Smith makes me doubt him more despite of the positive things I read. Maybe it's human nature but that's what I felt.
But that was not enough for me to really know. And I knew I had only one thing left to do to really know for myself whether he is a fraud or not. Do you know what that is?
Pray.
I knew that God exists and that He answers prayers. I would just ask Him if Joseph Smith really was His prophet or not. I know that if I asked in faith really wanting to know and really seeking for an answer then I thought He won't let me down. Because that's what He's promised us. 'Ask and ye shall receive'.
I guess you already know what answered I received. Right after I prayed sincerely, I received an answer. The answer was not dramatic like through a lightning or rain or the lights switched on and off or an angel appeared. The answer came through a very peaceful feeling in my heart. It was a feeling that I knew that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God and that God called Him in our day to restore His church. It was as if my whole existence knew it and I could never deny it. It was just a simple answer that God gave me. 'From small and simple things shall great things come to pass'.
After this all doubts were removed from my head. I know there will always be attacks against the church but what matters to me is the answer I received from my prayer. And that feeling has never changed.
That is the reason why you see missionaries in the streets. They don't get paid. It's a lot of sacrifice. But they know it's worth it as I have.
That is what I can advice also to others who are genuinely seeking for the truth. The LDS missionaries can give you evidence of the truthfulness of our doctrine and of the church but it's still up to you to find it out for yourself. And that is through prayer. Ask God if the things that they tell you are true. That is the only way to really know.
lets jus leave them alone.
Ang Western Wats was formerly by Ron Lindorf (not sure about the spelling). He is an LDS. Last 2004 he retired and sold the company. So the owners of Western Wats now are not LDS. It's a rumor nga kung LDS ka automatic makasulod naka sa Wats. Dili gyud intawn. I have some LDS friends nga wala kasulod because wala kapasar sa interview. And dili sad ta kaingon nga mas hatagan ug pabor ang mga LDS kay ang mga recruiting officer dili man mga LDS and they are pretty strict about that.
I know this because I've worked there from 2004-2007.
In addition to what I posted above...
Bible bashing or arguing points in the Bible reading verses to prove a certain point will never help. It will only make things worse. As we all can see there are almost 3000 Christian denominations all over the world today. They all claim to have the correct gospel and would readily argue with you with the Bible.
God designed the method of acquiring truth to be simple. Just ask Him.
To be fair, engaging in Bible debates may be helpful in a way that your reasoning may be developed and your knowledge about the Bible may increase. But one should not stop there. He should not rely on his own wisdom and logic. He should ask God in sincere prayer what is true.

No. Absolutely not. Wala mi connections sa 'amish' and I haven't heard about them until now.
Minyo na daan akong parents when they converted to LDS. So wala sila na minyo sa temple. But nag 'Family Sealing' mi sa Manila Temple last May 1999. Family Sealing is an ordinance in the temple where you will be sealed with your family 'forever' even after this life.
