avoid foods that are high in protein because breakdown of protein or the end-product of it is ammonia which should be converted into urea by the liver and is excreted through the urine. but if the liver now cannot convert it, then careful for ammonia toxicity which can lead to Hepatic Encephalopathy which is kinda deadly.
In Hepatic Encephalopathy, your central nervous system is hit. there is altered in level of consciousness and a lot more the end is of which coma then death.

high levels of ammonia too can cause Gastrointestinal bleeding..

here are some management which i learned from my Medsurge subject (i am a nursing student):
    *protein restriction (20-40 g daily)
*vegetable and dairy protein rather than from meat ( fewer ammonia-forming amino acids)
*reduce ammonia in blood and bacteria in colon
    a. neomycin - kills intestinal bacteria responsible for ammonia production
    b. lactulose - reduces absorption of ammonia by trapping ammonium ions and evacuating them
    from the bowel

just ask your doctor for confirmation :]
oh, you need to have ADEQUATE REST.

but if 75% of the liver is destroyed, then the only option there is LIVER TRANSPLANT.

    hi guys,
I just had my sgpt test last night and result is 44, the normal range written in the result is 0-35
i have read from this thread and the other thread in istorya that 40 is normal. can someone clarify this?

    medical history:
2006 - ultrasound showed a fatty liver, doctor advises to lose weight. and i did it.
2008 - i felt numbness in lower right portion of my torso, doctor advises to take vitamins bec. im not taking any.
2010 - just last week, pain in the lower right Back portion of my torso, doctor advises to take and sgpt test and result is 44 so he advises me to take essentiale forte.

    CAUSE?
since i was advised to take vitamins, i already take multivitamins (centrum) everyday since but only late january that i changed my multivitamins to a herbal multivitamins. i wonder if this caused my sgpt to go up. bec. some here says to stop supplements etc.

some books says its 0-35 but what i usually hear is 0-40. but what did your doc say?
maybe 40 is the high borderline yet still normal.
