DLSU Breaks Losing Slump; UE, San Beda Win Last Filoil Games
by Mia Domingo
IN THE final elimination round playdate of the 2009 Filoil Flying V MVP Cup, University of the East, De La Salle University and San Beda College came up with stirring and memorable performances.
UE took advantage of a depleted Far Eastern University quintet en route to a 63-56 victory in the first of three games at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last June 5. James Martinez led the Red Warrior assault with 16 points while Elmer Espiritu and Paul Lee each contributed 10. The Red Warriors dominated proceedings from the get-go, leading by as many as 15 in the second quarter.
Reil Cervantes led the Tamaraws, who played sans Philippine Developmental Team mainstays Mark Barroca, JR Cawaling and Aldrech Ramos, with 18 points.
In the second game, DLSU broke out of its slump with a convincing 94-81 triumph over Colegio de San Juan de Letran. The Green Archers overcame an eight-point deficit in the second quarter and turned the game around in the 7:17 mark of the final period, where they built their largest lead at 77-65. Forward Maui Villanueva had arguably his best game of the summer to lead La Salle with 16 points. RJ Jazul, meanwhile, led the Knights with 26 markers.
The battle of the champions, pitting NCAA kings San Beda College and UAAP titlists Ateneo de Manila, closed out the elimination round with the Red Lions defeating the Katipunan unit, 80-71. After a close first quarter, the three-time, defending NCAA champions pulled away thanks to the exploits of Garvo Lanete and rookie center Sudan Daniel.
Lanete scored 21 points while Daniel netted 17 for the Mendiola outfit, whose cause was also bolstered by double-digit scoring outputs from Bam Gamalinda, Jake Pascual and Chico Tirona. The trio combined for 36 huge points, offsetting Eric Salamat’s 20-point production for the Blue Eagles.
The quarterfinal round kicks off this Saturday, June 6, with a lone matchup between UE and Mapua. The Cardinals qualified for the knockout round despite a 3-4 win-loss record after Ateneo (5-2) pulled out of the tournament. The Blue Eagles will be flying to Cebu for a series of scrimmages. On Wednesday, June 10, the quarters resume with Adamson taking on San Sebastian, San Beda and De La Salle slugging it out and Jose Rizal locking horns with FEU. All games will still be played at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
