LARRY BROWN TO BOBCATS: confirmed
Larry Brown has decided to accept the Bobcats' offer to become their coach, a long-time NBA executive confirmed early today. The Bobcats have called a 1 p.m. ET news conference to make a "major" announcement. The Observer reported Saturday that Brown had interest in the job, if available, and on Saturday morning coach Sam Vincent was fired after a 32-50 season.
We’ll find out once and for all if Raymond Felton is a point guard. Brown is hard on point guards, forcing them either to excel or fizzle out. I’m confident Phil Ford will remain on the staff, not just because all three (Brown, Ford, Felton) are ex-Tar Heels, but because Ford will be an important buffer zone between Brown and Felton.

BYRON SCOTT: 2008 COACH OF THE YEAR?
New Orleans coach Byron Scott, who led the Hornets to their first playoff appearance in four years this season, has been chosen as the NBA coach of the year, The Associated Press has learned. A person with knowledge of the award spoke with the AP on condition of anonymity because the league had not yet announced it. New Orleans sent a media advisory Monday afternoon, saying it planned a "major announcement" at 10 a.m. Tuesday following the Hornets' game day shootaround.
Scott is expected to receive the award Tuesday before the Hornets host the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series. New Orleans leads 3-1.
Other front-runners for coach of the year included Boston coach Doc Rivers, who led the Celtics to the best record in the NBA (66-16), as well as Houston coach Rick Adelman, who oversaw the Rockets' improbable 22-game winning streak and helped his team stay competitive after a season-ending foot injury to star centre Yao Ming.

Avery Realizes He Could Be Fired In Dallas
Avery Johnson talked openly on Monday about the possibility of being fired and on whether or not the Mavericks are still in his corner, according to the Dallas Morning News.
"Overall, these men have been very loyal to me," Johnson said. "It's a tough spot for us. Sometimes, we haven't played our best basketball. Maybe another team at that particular time was just a better team. But it's not because the men don't listen or don't try."
"This is a team that hasn't been together for a while. We've tried to incorporate a very tough situation. And we just haven't had the type of carryover like we want," he added.
The Mavericks have had problems on the road all season and will need to win in New Orleans on Tuesday night in order to keep their title hopes alive.

Mark Jackson visits Chicago
Current ABC analyst Mark Jackson will interview on Wednesday for the heading coach position with the Bulls, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
They will likely meet in Los Angeles despite his rumored status as the leading candidate for the same job in New York.
Jackson met with Donnie Walsh in Phoenix last week.

Iverson wants extension
Allen Iverson has one year left on his current contract, which pays him a base of $20.8 million.
"If I could, I would get it done tomorrow," Iverson said following the Nuggets' departure from the playoffs. "Once I talk to my people (agents), I'll have an idea."
Iverson has consistently expressed a wish to remain with the Nuggets.
RealGM Note: As the 8th best player in the NBA according to our season FIC, Iverson had a +0% Reina Value and 'deserved' to make his actual salary of $19.01 million.

Stern Not Ordered To Testify In SuperSonics Case
NBA Commissioner David Stern will not be called on to testify in the court case between the city of Seattle and the Supersonics, the Associated Press is reporting.
The city is trying to keep the Sonics from moving, forcing the team to complete the final two years of a lease agreement for Seattle's KeyArena, the NBA's smallest venue.
"I would rather spend my time working," Stern said. "But if the judge orders me to testify, I'll testify. We don't have anything to hide."
THE LATEST:
MAVS DISMISS AVERY JOHNSON
The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have relieved Avery Johnson of his coaching duties. Johnson became the eighth coach in Mavericks history on March 19, 2005. He collected a record of 194-70 (.735) during his tenure with a postseason record of 23-24 (.489). “I would like to thank Avery for his valuable contributions to the Mavericks organization,” President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Donnie Nelson said. “Over the past four years, he has been an integral part of our team’s success. We wish AJ nothing but the very best in his future endeavors.”
Avery Johnson’s rift with his club was apparent in the Hornets series. Down 2-0, he said to blame him, adding it was his fault they were missing layups, free throws and defensive assignments. The next day, Josh Howard went on local radio to talk about how much he and other NBA players enjoy marijuana.
Then, after losing Game 4, Johnson canceled an off-day practice only to discover that players ended up putting themselves through a workout without him. He may not be unemployed very long. The New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls are among the teams needing coaches and both might want a young, proven coach who preaches defense and discipline.

ANOTHER TROPHY FOR KD; this time its the NBA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD
onics rookie Kevin Durant will be named the league's Rookie of the Year on Thursday, beating out Hawks' rookie Al Horford for the honor, Percy Allen of the Seattle Times is reporting.
The source which revealed the information did so anonymously since the official announcement is not expected to come until Thursday.
Durant led all rookies in scoring, assists and free-throw percentage, and will become the first Sonic to receive the honor.
RealGM Note: Horford had a higher season FIC than Durant (882 to 763) and a higher per 40 FIC (13.9 to 11.0).

The Nuggets might be interested in acquiring the services of guard/forward Mickael Pietrus this summer, according to the Denver Post.
The team desperately needs to add players to fortify their defense, and he likely wouldn't cost the Nuggets very much money.

Steve Kerr refuted a report on Wednesday that Head Coach Mike D'Antoni is on his way out in Phoenix.
"There's no truth to that," Kerr told the Arizona Republic. "I asked Mike when the story came out, and he denied it. Mike's our coach and has done a great job for four years. We'll get together soon and talk about where this team can go from here."

MAVERICKS HIRE RICK CARLISLE
Sources have told the New York Post that the 2001-02 Coach of the Year Rick Carlisle has agreed to terms to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks .
Carlisle had previously interviewed with Chicago and New York, with the Knicks' interview coming only on Wednesday, before Dallas quickly swooped and hired the former Piston and Pacer coach.
Dallas fired Avery Johnson only on Wednesday after the Mavericks fell in the first round for the second consecutive season, this time to the New Orleans Hornets .

Kobe To Be Named NBA MVP
It has taken 12 seasons and just as much criticism, but Kobe Bryant has earned his first league MVP award, the L.A. Times are reporting.
The official announcement will come in Los Angeles next week by David Stern, but sources have revealed that Bryant is the winner, according to the report.
The MVP award was believed to be between Bryant and New Orleans' dynamic guard Chris Paul, both of whom have guided their teams to huge turnarounds from last season.

Stefanski Expects To Match Offers For Iguodala
Ed Stefanski is glad that Andre Iguodala is a restricted free agent because he claims that the Sixers plan on matching any offers for the young swingman, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
"I would say, 'Thank God they're restricted,' because we have no intention of not matching any offer from another team," Stefanski said of Iguodala and Louis Williams.
Iguodala rejected an extension offer from then-GM Billy King during the season that would have paid him $57 million.
"We need to keep getting better pieces," Stefanski added. "The beauty of this is, young guys get older and [improve as] NBA players. We have to decide whether they can help us get to the next level."
RealGM Note: Iguodala was ranked 20th in the entire NBA by our FIC statistical measurement. He 'deserved' to make $13.76 million and had a Reina Value of +399%.
THE LATEST:
It will be interesting to see how the 29 other teams react to Josh Smith's impending free agency. Smith, who turned down a $45 million, five-year extension last summer, will be one of several intriguing restricted free agents after July 1. (Among the others: Andre Iguodala, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Emeka Okafor, and Smith's Atlanta teammate, Josh Childress, to whom the Hawks offered nada because of injury concerns.)
One of the factors in Smith's decision could well be the fate of coach Mike Woodson, whose contract expires this summer as well. Let's just say Josh won't strongly object to a coaching change. Throw in the requisite weirdness in the Atlanta organization and there are a number of possibilities for Smith.
Philadelphia will have cap room. There could be sign-and-trade options, although Smith, who makes $2.24 million, would seem to be a base-year compensation guy. But it would be shame if Atlanta lost one of its three top players just at the time when the city started to embrace its NBA team again.
==================
. The Mavs remain loaded down with hard-to-move contracts. Nowitzki, at $18.1 million next season, and Kidd, at $21.4 million, are the two perennial All-Stars. Josh Howard, at $10 million, is also expected back despite his questionable behavior during the playoffs.
Jason Terry has four years and about $41 million left on his contract, making him hard to trade, and the Mavs need shooters. Center Erick Dampier, who had his weakest season as a Maverick, has two of three seasons guaranteed at about $20 million, still a high price to find a trading partner.
Jerry Stackhouse could be an interesting trade piece. Slowed by injuries and poor shooting this season, he has two seasons left on his deal at $7 million next season and just $2 million the following season, making the 33-year-old more palatable to a trade partner.
Mike D'Antoni was given the permission to talk to other teams which included Chicago and New York. D'Antoni was previously denied to speak with other teams but was given the permission lately. He's still got 2 more years left in his contract but might resign if he's headed to Chicago.
Steve Kerr was asked if he's a candidate for the Suns' coaching job if D'Antoni would be out and declined the rumors saying that he wouldn't consider coaching not until his children are all already out of school.
