CEBU, Philippines - The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters last night drew the first blood in their best-of-five championship series against the defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers with a 72-66 win in Game 1 of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball finals at the Cebu Coliseum.
Games tomorrow(Cebu Coliseum)
1 pm - UV vs. UV (Jrs. for 3rd place)
2:30 pm - USC vs. SWU (Srs. for 3rd place)
4 pm SHS - Ateneo vs. CEC (Jrs. finals)
5:30 pm UV vs. UC (Srs. finals)
Earlier, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons won the series opener against the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles via an 88-70 demolition.
The Webmasters blew away a 12-point third quarter lead, but despite of the meltdown they only allowed the Lancers to tie the count on one occasion in the entire game, 58-all at the 6:51 mark of the fourth period.
After UC’s 6-9 center Junemar Fajardo made it 60-58, the Lancers could no longer come up with good shots although they never let the Webmasters pull away.
Obviously, the height advantage became the Webmasters' most lethal weapon and with Fajardo dominating the paint.
Adding to the Webmasters' more superior offense was the presence of Edward Pao and Quinton Brian Heruela.
Fajardo has been UC’s go to guy when it needs instant offense with the support of guards Kelvin Juliane and Robinson Mohammad.
Fajardo led the Webmasters with 23 points. Heruela added 15 and Juliane had 12 markers.
The Webmasters largest lead in the game was at 14 points, 34-20 late in the second period.
Calo led the Lancers with 18 points while John Michael Abad and Adrian Lao added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Earlier, the Dragons had four players scoring 14 points to lead their near flawless offense and showed the same fashion when they demolished the Magis Eagles in the league opener last July 31 when they scored an 87-70 rout.
Nike Montalvo, Benjamin James Zosa, Roy Villarias and Marvin Bauya spelled the difference for the Dragons, who also mounted a solid defense.
The Magis Eagles' shooting went sour in the third period and even if Adrian Roland Muller top scored with 22 points, he still missed so many under goal shots in the last five minutes of the ballgame.
Inspired by the presence of their chief backer and prominent alumnus, Chester Cokaliong, the Dragons led by as many as 22 points, 85-63, with still over a minute left to play.
“If we win the championship, it is history for the school that has transformed itself from being a laughing stock to champion,” Cokaliong said.
“This is the first time that this has happened in Cebu inter-school basketball.”
He said that he is very confident that the team can reach its goal of winning the title.
He also thanked Frederick ‘Llama’ Ong, a fellow alumnus, who believed that the team can reach this far in the tournament.
Both the Webmasters and the Dragons are gunning for a pivotal 2-0 lead tomorrow. (THE FREEMAN)
UC, CEC take lead

THE Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters got the head start in their best-of-five championship series for the 2010 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball title last night. The Dragons soared high as they defeated the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Eagles, 88-70, in the high school division, while the Webmasters weathered the end-game rally of the defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers for a 72-66 win in the collegiate match.
The Dragons made no mistake as they played like there was no tomorrow when they mangled the equally prepared Eagles.
After a slim 22-21 lead in the opening quarter, CEC turned to Marven Bauya and Nike Montalvo to erect a 45-38 lead at the break.
Raymond Sypongco and Roy Vincent Villarias gave CEC their first taste of a double-digit lead early in the third, as Adrian Roland Muller struggled to keep the Eagles in the game.
But CEC suddenly got fierce, and used a quick 16-5 blitz to take a 20-point lead, 67-47, with less than a minute left in the third period.
CEC’s got its biggest lead at 75-52 still with 6:58 left, while the Eagles struggled on both ends. Things got worse for the Eagles when Adven Jess Diputado, their main scorer, fouled out with still 5:42 left to play.
Four Dragons scored 14 points--Bauya, Montalvo, Villarias and BJ Zosa—while Muller had the game-high 22 points for Ateneo. Diputado had 15 before fouling out.
Meanwhile, Junemar Fajardo scored six points as UC got to a 15-0 lead that kept the Lancers at bay most of the match.
However, the championship experience of the Lancers slowly showed as they managed to tie the game at 58 in 6:51 mark of the final period before Fajardo took over the scoring cudgel again to keep the Webmasters intact the rest of the way.
The Lancers will have to find a way to stop Fajardo’s superiority in height and size soon or their quest for their 10th straight title will be in great peril. The 6’10” Fajardo had 23 points in their Game 1 win and was unstoppable in the middle.

The University of Cebu Webmasters fired the first shot in what is expected to be a long and tempestuous war as they took Game 1, 72-66 of the best-of-five championship series in the seniors division over the reigning nine-time champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament, yesterday at the packed Cebu Coliseum.
The Cebu Eastern College Dragons also took a step closer towards completing a Cinderella-finish in their magical season after they repulsed the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 88-70, in Game 1 of their own best-of-five affair in the juniors division.
The win by the Webmasters put the mighty Lancers in a predicament which they have not faced in their nine-year reign atop the basketball hierarchy of the Cesafi, since they have never trailed in a finals series. UC made sure of that with a fiery start and a gallant finish.
The Webmasters started the match with guns blazing, scoring the game's first 15 points. It did not take long though, for the Lancers to rev their green machine up and rode the efforts of flashy guard Eman Calo to trim the deficit down to eight, 26-34, at halftime. UV continued to find their stride and closed to within four, 32-36, but UC persevered and padded their lead to nine, 53-44, heading into the final canto.
Then, things got interesting as UV unloaded a 14-5 counterattack sparked by a three-pointer by John Abad and capped off by an exciting three-point play by Calo to tie the score at 58-all, with 6:51 left. Sensing trouble, UC's 6-foot-10 giant Junemar Fajardo then took control and scored two baskets in a brief 5-0 spurt for a, 63-58 UC lead.
Two free-throws by Calo put UV within three, 60-63, but new UC recruit and former Baby Lancer Brian Heruela turned the tables on his former alma mater by scoring on a huge trifecta to give UC a comfortable, 66-60 lead, an advantage that held until the final buzzer.
Fajardo scored 23 points to lead UC while Heruela and Kelvin Juliane added 15 and 12 points, respectively. Calo scored 18 to pace UV.
DRAGONS TAKE GAME 1
Meanwhile, in a game between two squads separated by a shade of blue, the Dragons turned to their hustle and speed and the surprise contributions of reserve forward Marvin Bauya to remind the upstart Eagles why they were the best in the league this year.
The game was played on even keel during the first period but the Dragons gained some headway in the second canto when they went on an 11-2 run, a rally that featured a combined nine markers from little-known Raymund Syponco and Bauya, to put their team in front, 42-32, and eventually, 45-38, at halftime.
Then, smelling blood, the Dragons pierced the Eagles’ hearts with yet another 11-2 scoring surge anchored again on Bauya's all-around game to put CEC ahead by 20, 67-47, late in the third stanza.
The Dragons greeted the fourth with an, 8-1 run, a rally that saw star forward Nikee Montalvo dive to the floor to collar a looseball and pass it to guard Luther Nuevos, who in turn sped upcourt and dropped it off for center Lyle Sumayang who canned an uncontested lay-up, to give them a 75-62 advantage. The sequence drew raucous cheers from CEC’s supporters led by chief patron Chester Cokaliong.
What Montalvo, Sumayang, Villarias and Bauya started, BJ Zosa then finished, as the lefty gunner with the funky shot made three three-pointers afterwards for 11 of his 14 points to seal the Game 1 victory for the Dragons. Montalvo, Villarias and Bauya also scored 14 points each while Syponco tallied 10 markers.
SHS-AdC was paced by Adrian Muller's 23 points and Jess Adven Diputado's 15. Aside from the Eagles' dynamic duo, nobody else scored in double-digits for the Magis Eagles.
