    Teams slam changes

    By Marian C. Barin
    Friday, October 1, 2010

“WE are sticking to the original schedule even if they ban us for life.”
Southwestern University (SWU) athletic director Ryan Aznar issued this warning after the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) changed the schedule just a day before their match in the semis round.
The schedule that the coaches want to follow is the winner vs. loser format in the round-robin semifinal. This means SWU, which won over the University of the Visayas (UV), will next face the University of San Carlos (USC), which lost to the University of Cebu (UC). UC was supposed to face UV today.

However, Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy sent a new schedule by text last Thursday, with the winners facing each other (SWU vs. UC) and the losers squaring off (UV vs. USC).
The coach said that ruined their preparation.
Aznar and SWU coach Bong Bigontes and USC assistant coach Ryan Bettia, who represented
coach Mike Reyes during a press con yesterday, questioned the changes.
“It is very disappointing. I think they are doing this to favor UC,” said Aznar.
UC team manager Baldomero Estenzo disputed the charges.
“It (original schedule) was announced three times. However, Atty. Estenzo approached the deputy commissioners (Danny Duran and Julian Macoy) and then changed the schedule. What was that all about?” said Bettia.
Aznar said the new schedule, where the winner will face the winner and the loser will also take on the loser, will greatly be advantageous to UC.
“This new schedule will greatly benefit UC because they have a better chance of winning over us than when they face UV. They may be trying to avoid a game with UV right after the defending champion lost,” said Aznar.
If UC wins over SWU, its chances of making the finals improve.
“What is unfair is I was never informed of the changes and we learned only of the new schedule this afternoon (yesterday). We already prepared for a game against USC. USC and UC have very different strengths and weaknesses,” said SWU coach Bigontes.
SWU will face UV under the new schedule at 6 p.m., but they will show up for their “original game,” a 4 p.m. match against USC.
Last Thursday’s announcement caused heated exchanges of text messages between Tiukinhoy and the USC coaching staff.
On the other hand, Estenzo said he only approached the deputies to clarify the schedule and said the winner versus winner format was agreed upon even before the tournament started.
“Every game should be a bearing game until the end of the semifinals. We are doing this for the crowd,” said Estenzo.
“The problem was they were not able to clear the schedule with Tiukinhoy first and what was released was the loser vs. loser format. But it was agreed during the meeting before the league started what format we will be following. How can they say this is to favor UC when this is a round robin format and we will still be facing UV? Nangita ra gyud silag gubot,” said Estenzo.
Tiukinhoy said accusing Cesafi of favoring UC is ridiculous.
“There is no malice in making that schedule. I don’t understand why they are making a ruckus out of it,” said Tiukinhoy.

I know who you are referring to, i was there yesterday. Gihatag? I doubt it. The truth is often difficult to accept, CEC got outcoached, outhustled and outplayed.

It is unfair to insinuate that Coach Jerry gave the W to SHS AdC. He is a respectable and honorable man, dili siya magpagamit sa kang bisan kinsa. The game was really for bragging rights alone, both teams fought very well, now we are even.

For whatever it is worth, that was a non-bearing win that SHS ADC fought very hard for. We have busted lips, bruised ribs and cheeks to prove so. CEC still retains number 1 ranking anyway. The young inexperience Magis Eagles remain the underdogs and we like it that way.

We now see the promised land... we can slay the dragon. CEC is a worthy opponent. For both our teams to be in the finals on our second year of participation in CESAFI basketball, we have both already succeeded. Let's give each other a friendly pat on the back for our teams' achievement...... Since kinahanglan isa ra ang chamption, may the better team win the series.

As I have consistently said, we continue to be hopeful that we will spoil CEC's party. In the meantime, let's all enjoy the ride! ONE BIG FIGHT!

A FITTING FINALE
CEC, SHS AdC continue amazing turnaround

Advance to Cesafi juniors basketball finals
Cebu Daily News First Posted 10:27:00 10/04/2010 Filed Under: Basketball

The Cebu Eastern College Dragons and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles started the battle, it is only fitting that they finish the war.

The two teams completed their rags-to-riches story in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament by setting up a finals showdown with one another after the Eagles tamed the Dragons, 84-79, in the semifinals yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

CEC and SHS-AdC played on the first day of the competition with the Dragons whipping the Eagles, 87-70. Yesterday was payback time for the Eagles as they handed the Dragons their first loss in the semifinal round and tied their victims at the top of the heap with similar 2-1 (win-loss) records.

As a result, the two teams advanced to the finals in only their second year in the league.

This scenario seemed ludicrous to imagine after CEC's humiliating showing and SHS-AdC's own flameout last season.

Yesterday, the Eagles were intent on getting revenge as they held the Dragons to just three points in the first five minutes of the game and held a 20-11 lead after the first period.

CEC took the lead at halftime, 37-34, behind the hot shooting of BJ Zosa, Nikee Montalvo and Roy Villarias.

However, SHS-AdC took full control of the lead in the third, thanks to the efforts of Jess Diputado and Adrian Muller as well as the trigger-happy referees, who called 11 fouls on the Dragons in that stretch. ? Jonas insinuating that the game was given to SHS AdC by the refs?

The lead ballooned to a high of 13, 75-62, before the Dragons trimmed it down to just three, 79-82, with just 16 seconds left in the game. But Diputado calmly sealed the win and their berth in the finals with two pressure-packed free-throws, his final points in his 23-point showing.

Muller also had 16 while Bradley Bacaltos and Julius Cadavis contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

CEC was paced by Montalvo's 22 points and the 13 of Villarias.

Earlier, the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers ended their stint in the semis on a high note as they survived a huge comeback by the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters to win in overtime, 100-94. Jupasko note: based on the olympic tie-break quotient system used by Cesafi, UV needed to win by 8 points to achieve 2nd place ranking and play CEC in the finals. Ergo, the game between SHS AdC and CEC yesterday was non-bearing, it was purely for bragging rights. Win or lose, SHS AdC was ranked 2nd already before game time, thanks to the futile comeback staged by UC in trimming down a 20+ points deficit to just 6.

It was their first win of this stage and it would not have happened, if not for Michael Smith's heroics at the end of regulation.

Smith, who exploded for 31 points spiked by six three-pointers, made a trifecta with just six ticks left to tie the game up at 83-all, to help his team save face after losing a 20-point lead.

UV and UC ended the round with identical 1-2 cards.

In the seniors division, the UC Webmasters took a step closer towards making their way back to the finals after they grabbed their second win in a row in the semis, with an 86-68 drubbing of the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras.

6-foot-10 behemoth Junemar Fajardo tallied 32 points to lead UC.
