Will Mavericks add ESPY team crown?
This might be the last time you see the Dallas Mavericks together for a quite some time (courtesy of the NBA lockout). They'll gather with sport's greatest teams and athletes tonight at L.A. Live for the annual the ESPYs (8 p.m., ESPN).
The world champion Mavericks are up for "Best Team," a stacked category that includes that the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers winning their first title since Brett Favre in the 1990s, the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins bringing Beantown the Cup for the first time 1972, the World Series champion San Francisco Giants winning it all since their days in New York, BCS football champion Auburn Tigers and the Texas A&M women's basketball champions.
According to Patrick Dorsey of ESPN.com's Page 2, since 2001, this award has gone to four NBA teams, the most of any sport, and he's predicting the Mavs make it five.
The other category of local interest is "Best Male Athlete," including NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki, four-time defending NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson, Rafael Nadal and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Dorsey thinks it'll be tough for anyone to top Rodgers.
Of course, that's what they said about Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki wins 'Best NBA player' award, defends his rendition of 'We are the Champions'
Dirk Nowitzki may not have won the NBA’s MVP award for the 2010-2011 season, but his postseason heroics were enough to give him the nod as “Best NBA player” at this year’s ESPY awards.
The German bested Kobe Bryant , Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Derrick Rose to win the award Wednesday night.
Instead of giving a heartful acceptance speech during the pre-show, when he was announced as the winner, Nowitzki spent the majority of the time with Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic defending a few of his post-victory faux paus: his redention of "We are the Champions" and his way-too-high first pitch at a Rangers game.
His take on both:
On the singing: "It came out of nowhere. I think Cuban kind of said 'Hey, do you want to sing?' and I was like 'Let's do it!' ... My voice was obviously gone. We had a tough night in Miami celebrating after we won it. I don't think I'll get a singing contract after my career. ... I think if you would have asked me a month earlier and I was still focused on everything, I would have been better."
On the pitch: "Everybody kept telling me 'Don't throw it in the dirt, don't throw it in the dirt,' so I left it way high and Michael Young almost pulled a hamstring having to jump up to get it. It was an unbelievable reception and a great day."
At the end of the interview, Nowitzki also gave an optimistic outlook in regards to the NBA lockout.
"I really can't see this going on too long," he said. "I think that the game is at a great stage -- I think The Finals having been watched by so many people as it has been in a long time. I just think both sides have to come together. It's always a little give and take, not one side is going to get everything.
So hopefully we're going to get by this period and both settle in and get a deal done. I just can't see us having another long lockout."
