Sony’s E3 conference is tomorrow. This we all know. What we don’t know is the line-up of surprises Sony has in store for us. Announcing games like Killzone 3, InFamous 2, and LittleBIGPlanet 2 just before E3 while still claiming the biggest announcements are to come is a daring feat which has everyone’s mind buzzing with possibilities. What could they be? Whatever they are, we know they’re gonna be huge, and we know Sony knows what a huge announcement is. Open up your minds as I share with you five of my reasonably realistic and completely unbiased predictions.
Grand Theft Auto V announced exclusively for PS3
We all know by now that Rockstar offered to make Grand Theft Auto IV exclusive to the PS3 for a year, to which Sony made no response and allowed Microsoft to swoop in with a blank cheque to secure a day-one release on 360 as well as timed-exclusive DLC. So it’s no secret that Rockstar has love for Sony. They’ve also complained about the size-limitations of the 360’s DVD regarding L.A. Noire (and with GTA IV as well). They’re adamant about keeping Agent exclusive and even gave the PS3 version of Red Dead Redemption some exclusive DLC (though it can be argued that this was an apology for knowingly delivering a slightly-inferior version on PS3). Predicting Grand Theft Auto V being announced exclusively for the PS3 also fits as the rumored exclusive-deal they made, and is not unbelievable at all.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII & Final Fantasy XIV remain exclusive to PS3
Last year, Microsoft shocked the entire gaming world by announcing Final Fantasy XIII for 360, releasing day-one stateside next to the once-exclusive PS3 version. Even more shocking yet would have been doing it again with the other two Final Fantasy games, Versus XIII and XIV online. Absent from Microsoft’s conference was not only Final Fantasy but Square-Enix altogether, strange considering their loyalty to Microsoft this generation. After the rumors that have been circulating about both games going multiplatform, the only thing bigger than both games going to the 360 is both games remaining only on PS3. I predict that both games will be featured at Sony’s E3 conference with the first gameplay footage revealed and PS3 exclusivity reaffirmed.
Kingdom Hearts III announced exclusively for PS3
The most obvious information supporting this prediction is the exclusivity of Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II on PS2. Another hint is how Tetsuya Nomura, who directed the still-exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII but was involved little in the now-multiplatform Final Fantasy XIII, is the director of the Kingdom Hearts franchise. No, he does not have the final say, but his word is certainly not without value. What we know for certain is that the next main entry in this beloved series is coming, and as an exclusive like the previous two, it would most certainly sell consoles. And I think Sony knows this.
Resistance 3 announced and set for release in Q4
With that infamous billboard came an unwritten confirmation of the highly-desired Resistance 3. Insomniac has been good for a new PS3 game each year, and if the hard-working company continues this trend, it’s about time for the next chapter in the Resistance franchise, set for a Q4 release I predict. I’m sure we can expect a conclusion to the story like a traditional franchise trilogy, massive competitive online (40 players for Resistance: Fall Of Man, 60 for Resistance 2… Can we expect 80 player online for Resistance 3?), online co-op with lore-expanding missions, awesome weapons and slick visuals. Bring on the chimera.
More PS2 HD/3D Collections announced
At the time of writing this, 1UP reported seeing a Sly Cooper Collection advertised with 3D support on the show floor so I guess that’s one point for me. However, I’m gonna take this prediction up a notch and say that we’re gonna get more HD/3D Collections tomorrow at Sony’s conference. The trend seems to be first-party PS2 exclusives, so I think it’s highly likely we’ll be seeing HD/3D Collections for Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and ICO/Shadow Of The Colossus at Sony’s E3 conference, if not in the very near future. To coincide with my other prediction of Kingdom Hearts III on PS3, a Kingdom Hearts Collection could be in the works as well.
So those are five big predictions I’m getting off my chest. After Microsoft’s acquisition of a Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, and Metal Gear Solid game this generation, I’m sure Sony has learned the importance of their trademark franchises, and buying these exclusives is certainly not unrealistic, though I myself don’t mind so much the games being available to people with only a 360 (such as my own brother for example). Feel free to agree with my predictions or flame me and brand me a fanboy. I encourage readers to share their predictions in the comment section. Enjoy this food for thought and make sure you don’t miss Sony’s E3 conference tomorrow afternoon following Nintendo’s!
