Dallas’ Dominique Jones is the latest to tattoo his neck
Dominique Jones(notes) of the Dallas Mavericks has decided to cash in on his triumphant turn as an NBA champion, commemorating his team's Finals triumph with a neck tattoo featuring the Lawrence O'Brien trophy. Also, Dominique Jones is on the Dallas Mavericks. We swear.
He didn't play in the playoffs, much less the Finals, and he only managed 136 minutes in his injury-plagued rookie season. But, sure -- tat it up, guy with plenty of money and time on his hands. Let's make this thing indelible!
(I'm sure that last line was what he said when he strolled into the tattoo parlor, and using "parlor" as a way to describe a building or basement where you get tattoos remains the funniest thing since B.J. and the Bear. As if they're drinking sherry and sporting formal wear.)
Jones has his influences. Teammate Jason Terry(notes), bravely, decided to get a tattoo along the same lines before the season started, as a personal reminder that it was on him to push this team over the top.
And though JET had his struggles at times in the postseason, he was a huge part of the team's championship run, even on both ends of the court. And DeShawn Stevenson(notes)? Well, he gets neck tattoos.
Put the two together, and you have Jones. Minus all the minutes and name recognition but complete with a Larry O'Brien trophy tattooed to his ruddy neck.
Best realization? We now know what Dominique Jones' neck looks like, far clearer than we remember what Dominique Jones' face looks like.

Dirk Nowitzki turns 33 with surprise bash
Dirk Nowitzki’s weeklong run of championship celebrations was capped by a surprise birthday party thrown for him Sunday night by girlfriend Jessica Olsson and lifelong coach/adviser Holger Geschwindner at the Dallas wine club Graileys.
The private event to commemorate Nowitzki’s 33rd birthday -- dubbed “Dinner For 41” -- featured exactly 41 guests, including Mavericks teammate Brian Cardinal, Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson and various team staffers and close friends. Also in attendance were former Stanley Cup-winning Dallas Star Mike Modano and three award-winning scientists who are also Mavs fans.
As part of the evening’s program, Nowitzki was presented with a Larry O’Brien championship trophy cake and treated to performances from a Dallas Symphony Orchestra string quartet (Christopher Adkins, Diane Kitzman, Gary Levinson and Ellen Rose) as well as Dallas-based comedian Paul Varghese.
Special guests included Dr. Hans Deisendorfer, professor of biochemistry at UT Southwestern who won a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1988 for his work in X-ray crystallography; Dr. Al Gilman, chairman emeritus of pharmacology at UT Southwestern who won a Nobel Prize in medicine in 1994 for his work on how cells communicate with each other; and Dr. Eric Olson, professor and chairman of molecular biology at UT Southwestern who won the LeFoulon Delalande Grand Prize from the French Academy of Science in 2009.
“Dirk was definitely surprised,” said Brian Dameris, one of the attendees and a former Mavs employee. “It was the perfect ending to the best week of his life.”

Mavericks get parade bill for almost $341,000
DALLAS — Dallas city officials who tallied up the cost for a parade celebrating the Mavericks' first NBA title last week say it came to $340,947.
City spokesman Frank Librio said Thursday the bill was sent straight to team owner Mark Cuban, who has agreed to pay promptly.
Cuban has said all along that he'd personally foot the bill for the parade celebrating the Mavs' NBA Finals victory over the Miami Heat.
According to the city's summary sheet, the largest expense, at $270,715, was for the 540-strong police presence. An additional 132 firefighters and paramedics on hand for emergencies cost $54,002. Clean-up was the smallest expense at $843.
The rest was spent on public works, Convention Center usage and various city services.
About 200,000 jubilant fans attended the downtown parade June 16th.
