THE case involving St. Theresa’s College (STC) and the high school student, who was barred from her graduation march because of photos on Facebook showing her in a swimsuit and holding a cigarette, sparked a debate in online discussion boards.
A news article about STC getting sued by the student’s parent, posted under politics and current events in Istorya.net, a Cebuano online community, had more than 12,400 views and nearly 500 comments. The comments tackled parental issues, schools run by “strict” religious orders, teenage behavior and defying court orders.

Most of the posts expressed a desire to see the photos of the high school student purportedly so they could form a better opinion of the issue.

Some online users were appalled by the actions of the school, calling it an invasion of the girl’s privacy. Others said the incident served as a warning to high school students who break the policies of their schools.
Four other students were also barred from the graduation rites yesterday.
Some rose to the defense of the school administration.
A member of Istorya.net, known as 7DMM, said both sides are at fault for letting the issue reach “disastrous proportions.”
A member, who claimed to be a teacher, said nobody can prevent the children’s actions outside the school premises.
Another member commented that students have become liberated so school officials should update their policies.
Personal
“Faith is up to a person. Church is just a place to pray,” said Jcgoyong, another forum participant.
There were members who proposed strict enforcement of the ban on selling cigarettes to minors.
On Twitter, expressions of support for STC officials were numerous. A common view: students were well aware of the rules and should face the consequences for breaking them.
Aside from the student whose photos appeared on Facebook, STC also barred the daughter of Cebu City Councilor Jose Daluz III.
The school defied a court order that granted the petition of girls’ parents, for their children to be allowed to join the graduation rites yesterday.
The girls who could not enter the school’s premises went to a nearby hotel and were overheard by Sun.Star Cebu talking about being criticized online.
In a report over TV Patrol’s Central Visayas, a parent of one of the girls said the incident pushed her child to write a suicide note.
“Grabe ang damage among nakuha ani. Among ubang anak nabiyaan (A lot of damage has been done. Our other children have been neglected),” she said.
The parent said the school should have allowed the girls to join the graduation march for humanitarian reasons.
Lawyer Romeo Balili, STC counsel, said the school cannot be held liable.
“A student’s behavior boils down to the (values) formation (they received from) their parents,” he said.
and this, is why I normally don't get swayed by reading the news. Because it can be sensationalized as one moderator mentioned here in the earlier pages.
Do you really think a family outing with the girls, would mean these girls smoke infront of some girl's parents?
Sure, there may be other pictures. But I want to reserve my judgment with the girls. But with STC, well they're gonna have a really bad day.
Also, that post was not meant to generalize the entire issue. It was meant to be sarcastic and specific to that picture, who knows that image explains the context for the rest of the photos. Please read the post again.

In a press conference in the evening, STC legal counsel Romeo Balili said the court order of RTC Judge Wilfredo Navarro was “deficient” and that the school did not have to obey it.
“Judge Navarro made a grievous act. He issued a TRO without a bond,” he said.
Balili said the court did not require the complainants to put up a bond to answer for possible damages so “We have all the right not to comply with the TRO.”

Parents were called in, were told of the violations and appealed to the school to lessen the penalty. Some suggested letting the girls make up for their mistakes by cleaning up the school grounds.
The principal said this was not enough.
“Cleaning the school… they would enjoy that. We like to give them something where they will feel that they have done something wrong,” Sr. Pe said last night.

A CRIMINAL complaint was filed yesterday against the principal and four teachers of St. Theresa's College High School after the school punished some students by barring them from attending their graduation rites.
Parents and guardians of three girls filed the complaint with the Cebu City Prosecutors Office for two offenses - grave oral defamation in relation to the Anti-Child Abuse Law (Republic Act 7610) and violation of the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009 (Republic Act 9995)
They said the school owes them an “apology” and compensation for damages as well.
