UC Jrs. stun SHS-Ateneo

CEBU, Philippines - John Raphael Aranas scored on a barreling drive to lift the Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters to a nerve-tingling 65-64 win over the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles last night in the Cebu [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]Schools[/COLOR][/COLOR] Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Junior Webmasters, who were trailing most of the way, erased an 11-point deficit earlier and continue to pounce on the youthfulness of the Magis Eagles, whose inexperience became the obvious reason of their endgame collapse.

It was actually a sorry loss for the Magis Eagles who were maintaining an 11-point lead, the last was at 39-28 early in the third quarter. They still led in the final 11 seconds on a split charities by Bradley Bacaltos.

With time winding down, Aranas dribbled his way to their frontcourt and squeezed in a beautiful lay-up with only 2.9 seconds left that turned out to be the game-clincher for the Junior Webmasters.


Bacaltos still made a long heave below the midcourt, but the just kissed the rim.

Aranas finished with 15 points for the Junior Webmasters even as it was robust center Alvin Labolabo topscored for UC with a game -high 30 points.

Adamme Talisic and Niko Nemeño, who were also part of the big run by UC, combined for 15 markers.

Point guard Adven Jess Diputado scattered 22 points for the Magis Eagles. Adrian Roland Muller had 12 points despite being handcuffed by the Junior Webmasters' stonewall defense.

With the win, the Junior Webmasters need only to win against the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers tomorrow to move closer to another finals appearance.

UC escapes SHS-Ateneo in Cesafi semis

THE University of Cebu Baby Webmasters leaned on the end game heroics of Alvin Labo-Labo Jr. and John Raphael Aranas to beat the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Eagles, 65-64, in the semifinal round of the 2010 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) High School Division match yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.


Labo-Labo scored eight of his game-high 30 points in the pivotal fourth quarter and Aranas converted a frantic drive to save the Baby Webmasters from defeat.

Trailing mostly after giving up the lead at the start of the second quarter, UC was brought back to life when Niko Nemeño and Adamme Talisic sank a triple each and the Baby Webmasters got close from 56-49, to 56-55 with 6:35 left to play.


Comeback

UC trailed by as high as 10 points, 31-21 back at the 4:02 mark of the second period.

However, the Eagles did not panic and turned to Adven Jess Diputado and Adrian Roland Muller for the needed breathing space for the next six minutes.


But the Eagles’ game turned south and they committed a lot of errors that gave Webmasters the opening they need to steal the game.


Two free throws from Labo-Labo off a foul from Henry Renzar Asilum tied the game for the first time since 14-all at the end of the first quarter.


Bradley Brian Bacaltos also got another free throw and sank the first. He missed the second and Labo-Labo collared the rebound and passed it to Aranas.


Aranas quickly dribbled upcourt but was met by three Eagles. However, Aranas managed to sneak past the defense and sank the winning basket with 2.9 seconds left in the game.


Muller managed to launch a final shot but his attempt fell short as time expired.


Aranas finished with 15 points for UC, while Diputado topscored for SHS-AdC with 23 points. Muller finished with 12.


On Saturday, SHS-AdC will gun for its first win against top seed CEC Dragons, while UC plays the University of the Visayas at the Cebu Coliseum.

there was a sudden change of the schedule yesterday, SWU will play against UC later instead of USC. and SWU is not happy about it and threatens to boycot the game. so there, looks like another controversy brewing. UV's loss to SWU put the UV-UC Finals chance in peril.
