1st Kitanglad international rugged mountain race

    By Joe Palabao

“THREE hundred International, Philippine, Local and Indigenous People runners will experience the toughest mountain running trail of the country and leave nothing undared for the benefit of the Indigenous Peoples as they take care of nature along the ranges of Mt. Kitanglad, Bukidnon.”

February 27, 2011 Bukidnon Province takes pride in presenting to the world the 1st ever Mt. Kitanglad International Rugged Mountain Race to be participated in the by Elite Runners from Kenya, Australia and other countries and from the Philippines and the local runners as well.

“Lumba Hu Patakurog Ta Kitanglad” will set personal record for the elite international, local and amateur runners as they are vying for prestige, honor and total Prize of Php 151,000.00 along with their priceless contribution in preserving Mt. Kitanglad and its Range Natural Park, the home of the Philippine Eagle-famous Heritage Park in Asia as declared by the United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Part of the proceeds will go projects of the Indigenous Peoples within the communities along the ranges of Mt. Kitanglad and support to Kitanglad Volunteer Guards (KVG).

Runners will run by altitude starting from an elevation of 1,300meters above sea level (ASL) at Sitio Intavas, La Fortuna, Impasug-ong and run uphill starting at 7AM to 12Noon to its top elevation of 2898meters above sea level (ASL)-the Run Summit and back to base with a total distance of 17KM. Reaching the Summit, runners will be given Turning Back Baler indicating they have reached the Summit and back again to base. Runners who would not arrive at the Summit at noon time will be given turning point baler for safety going back to base.

In an interview, Dr. Rachito ‘Chi-Chi’ Abellanosa, one of the event organizers and internationally known eco-adventure personality told Business Week Mindanao that 1st Kitanglad InternationalRugged Mountain Race is a 100% trail run to be experienced by the runners, no cement and asphalt road way. The runners will have to experience the real nature adventure running the rugged trails of Mt. Kitanglad and break their personal records and a world record for all to recognize.

Realizing this international venue are the efforts of Mr. Benjamen Maputi who is a rugged mountain race runner from Bukidnon who joined the 24th Kinabalo International Climbathon Malaysia. Along with him is the Marketing Support of the owner of Ohana Adventures, Ms. Maite Abellanosa-an eco-adventure event organizer who works hard in promoting this international rugged race. To her credit is the sponsorship coming from Columbia Sportswear Company, ROX Recreation Outdoor Exchange, the biggest outdoor store in South East Asia and the Northface.

The event is a business opportunity and a showcase of native food products and other products coming from the indigenous people (IPs) surrounding communities of Mt. Kitanglad.

1st Kitanglad International Rugged Mountain Race is organized by the DENR Protected Area Management Board (PAMP) chaired by Gov. Calingasan, Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park in cooperation of the Municipality of Impasug-ong, and supported by the Department of Tourism (DOT 10) and the municipalities of Manolo Fortich, Sumilao, Lantapan, Malaybalay, Libona, Talakag and Baungon.

here is an Example. We stop over at Guadalupe Shrine. From Brgy. Balubal to Guadalupe Shrine (about 6km) it took us about 4.5 hrs because of the degree of difficulty. From Guadalupe Shrine to Brgy Agusan (about 4km) it only took us 45 minutes because it's an easy route.
