2013 FIBA Asia Championship Iran books semis ticket with rout of Jordan

Iran waited two long years to get back at Jordan for eliminating them in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship. They were finally able to get their revenge by blowing out Jordan, 94-50, on Friday at the MOA Arena, in the quarterfinals of the 2013 edition of the regional tourney.
With the win, Iran kept its undefeated run intact and qualified for the semifinals, to be played tomorrow. They now await the winner between Chinese and Chinese Taipei.
Jordan on the other hand was relegated to the classification phase of the competitions.
Iran started the game with a 7-0 run before Jimmy Baxter registered Jordan’s first two points at the 7:44 mark. A triple from Hamed Afagh with 5:44 left in the period then gave Iran their first double digit lead of the game at 15-4.
Hamed Haddadi, Afagh, and Samad Nikkah Bahrami scored at will against the Jordan defense. They were joined by Oshin Sahakian, who produced five straight points late in the first quarter for a 25-16 count in Iran’s favor.
Hadadi missed a very long triple to end the first quarter, but Iran still had a commanding 31-11 lead after the first 10 minutes.
A triple from Jimmy Baxter cut the Iranian lead down to 21 at 37-16 with 5:53 left in the second quarter. However, Haddadi went to work in the following minutes to add more to Iran’s big lead. He scored on a two-handed dunk and followed it up with a three-point play at the 3:25 mark for a 46-22 count in their favor.
After another Haddadi basket, Baxter sank another triple to bring the Iranian lead down to 23. Mahdi Kamrany and Sahakian finished the quarter with five straight points though for Iran to build a 53-28 buffer heading to the halftime break.
Haddadi led all scorers with 15 points at the half while Afagh added 11. Baxter top-scored for Jordan with 11 markers.
Iran dominated the boards in the first half as they doubled Jordan’s 10 first half rebounds.
Kamrany scored the first three point of the quarter with Sahakian adding a three-point play at the 8:44 mark. By that time, Iran’s lead had ballooned to a whopping 31-points. Sahakian added another three-point play on their next possession for a 62-28 lead.
Jordan got some points on the board thanks to long shots from Baxter and Mohammad Hadrab, but it was too meek a reply to the onslaught that was the Iranian offense.
Things got worse for Jordan as Baxter was called for a technical foul with 4:55 left in the third, leading to two Haddadi free throws plus ball possession for Iran. Jordan coach Evangelos Alexandris was also called for a technical foul, which led to Iran’s lead climbing to 39 points after the free throws that followed.
Iran went into the fourth quarter with a 74-36 lead.
The Iranians cruised through the fourth quarter as their fans showered them with cheers. But they had a nervous moment when Hadadi went down at the 3:48 mark of the fourth clutching his right knee. Hadadi checked out of the ball game as he limped to the bench, but it looked like it was just a minor injury.
With less than a minute left in the game, Jordan’s Khaldoon Abu Ruqayah elbowed Kardoust, which sent the big man down. Abu Ruqayah was then called for an unsportsmanlike foul as he shoved Mohammed Jamshidijafarabadi. - AMD, GMA News

Jaworski gives props to Japeth's dad

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas member and new Ginebra player Japeth Aguilar felt proud when his father was mentioned by Robert Jaworski when the latter paid the national team a surprise visit.
Japeth’s father, Peter Aguilar, once played as a backup center under Jaworski in Anejo Rhum 65 (the old name of Barangay Ginebra) during the early 1990s.
“Nung na-meet ko siya (Jaworski), sobrang na-inspire ako kasi kinamayan niya lahat ng mga players, pero pagdating niya sa akin, ako lang ni-recognize niya,” Japeth told Spin.ph’s Richard Dy.
“Sabi niya, ‘O Japeth,’ sinabi niya pangalan ko, ‘Iyung tatay mo player ko dati. Mahusay din.’”
Japeth, who was recently acquired Ginebra from GlobalPort, said that what made him even more proud was that Jaworksi remembered his dad despite all the players he has handled.
“Nakaka-inspire kasi di ko inexpect 'yun since sa dami niyang (Jaworski) nahawakan na players, tapos maalala niya pa ng ganun ang papa ko. Malaking bagay yun para sa akin,” he said.

Key to beating Kazakhs: Strong start, strong finish

MANILA, Philippines - Jeff Chan knows what it would take Gilas Pilipinas to beat Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals of the 27th FIBA-Asia Championship.
“Strong start, strong finish,” said the certified three-point shooter for the Philippines.
Chan was heading out of the Mall of Asia Arena after Gilas scored an ugly 67-55 win over Hong Kong when he spoke to reporters Wednesday.
The former FEU Tamaraw said what happened against Hong Kong should never happen again as the FIBA-Asia tournament enters into its knockout stages.
“We lacked in defense and hustle. It was good that we picked up the intensity in the second half,” he said.
In six games, Chan had gone 17-of-29 from the three-point area. He was at his best against Jordan and Japan, going 5-of-7 and 4-of-5 and had three each against Qatar and Hong Kong.
Chan chooses his shots well, never on a rampage. In each of the six games he has never attempted more than seven times from beyond the arc.
Each time he hits one, the crowd gets going.
Chan said they can’t afford to relax any single minute against Kazakhstan, which almost beat China in the first round of the preliminaries.
“We can’t afford a bad start. We can’t relax. We cannot take Kazakhstan lightly. We need a strong start and a strong finish,” he said.
A victory over Qatar coupled by the latter’s win over Chinese-Taipei arranged Gilas’s quarterfinals matchup with Kazakhstan instead of China.
It may prove to be the break Gilas needs in the tournament that offers three slots to the 2014 World Championship in Spain.
“Personally, I was already thinking China as our next opponent,” said Chan.
But he welcomed the development because Kazakhstan, with injuries to three key players, is not as tough as China, the defending champion.
Still it doesn’t mean that Kazakhstan will be a walk in the park.
“It got a little lighter playing Kazakhstan instead of China because Yi (Jianlian) has returned to action,” said Chan of China’s starting center who sat out four games due to injury.
“We must thank the Lord for this chance,” he added. “Huwag natin ito palampasin.”
Did the Philippines find its own JaVale?
once upon a time, there were rumors that JaVale McGee might be willing to become a naturalized Filipino and join the national team. That never happened, but the country may have stumbled into a local answer to the Nuggets big man in Japeth Aguilar. Like McGee, Aguilar possesses a combination of size, speed, and agility that hardly any player in his league can match. Also like McGee, Aguilar frequently plays basketball like he's never played basketball before. In recent years, the 6-foot-9 Aguilar has been singled out for lackadaisical defense, falling in love with his unreliable perimeter game, and having only slightly better court awareness than a coconut tree.
Japeth Aguilar Dunks Vs Qatar - YouTube
Through the first six games of FIBA Asia, however, all that seems to be changing. He found a role for himself as the Philippines' ultimate energy player off the bench, and he has been harnessing his athletic gifts to block shots, grab offensive rebounds, and dunk every time he catches the ball within 5 feet of the basket. His block of a Qatari guard's layup attempt had middle-aged society matrons standing in the crowd, doing the Dikembe Mutumbo finger-wag, and his and-1 dunk in the second quarter might be the highlight of the tournament so far. If any Philippine fans were still glum over not landing JaVale for a couple weeks this summer, they probably feel better now, or at least more hopeful, because they could have this new-and-improved Japeth for years to come.
