TACLOBAN CITY—Thousands of “Yolanda” survivors watched President Benigno Aquino III’s State-of-the-Nation Address on Monday but were aghast at the lies he told his audience.

He said officials cleared the Tacloban airport within 24 hours after the typhoon made landfall, which was the reason three C-130 planes were able to bring in aid.

Robert, a public school teacher from San Jose District in this city, who lost five of his relatives from the strongest typhoon to hit land in history, said he could not believe what he heard.

“I never expected a President could lie in his SONA,” Robert said.

“The exodus could have been prevented and the looting would not have happened if there had been an immediate response from the government.”

Rowena of Anibong District, who survived the storm by clinging to the trusses of their house for more than three hours, said the President didn’t know what he was talking about.

“How could he lie after such painful event?” Rowena said.

“I wish he had been a little more respectful of the victims. They are still vulnerable emotionally and psychologically because they are still homeless, and several of them are orphans and widows.

“I wish he had experienced Yolanda’s wrath so he would know the victims’ feelings.”

Based on the data provided by the city government of Tacloban, more than 2,000 families were still living in the tent cities and more than 5,000 families needed to be relocated from the no-build zones more than eight months after Yolanda struck and killed thousands of people and left millions homeless.

Tacloban’s residents also rejected Aquino’s statement that the Leyte Water District resumed operations after two days, and that the first gasoline station opened on the third day.

They said it took five months before the water supply returned to normal, and that a month after the typhoon struck the price of gasoline was still P150 per liter.

International non-government organizations, particularly the Taiwanese Tzu Chi Buddhist Foundation, and not the government were responsible for the clearing of the debris in Tacloban and in the nearby municipalities.

Aquino said power was restored in all the municipalities hit by Yolanda before Christmas last year, but most of those interviewed for this report said most of the residents of Leyte province were still groping in the dark during the New Year celebrations.

Eflida Bautista, head of People Surge, a coalition of Yolanda victims, said most if not all of Aquino’s report on the government’s response to Yolanda were lies.

“I myself can testify that the national government sent no help one week after Yolanda,” Bautista said.

She said she was at the airport together with her family three days after the typhoon hoping to get out of Tacloban as the situation had become desperate. They had to beg the authorities to be allowed to board a C-130 plane.

Bautista said People’s Surge would continue to demand from the government what was due the typhoon victims even if they were accused of being communists or attempting to destabilize the Aquino administration.

Where 70% is more likely were dependent to 30% of it. That is an "average" of 5 children in every couple. While the rest of the population managed to have only 2 or 3 children..... ask mo ngano na-pobre?

I have been a keen observer sa mga nagagawa ng ating mga president noon at kasalukuyan. Walang perpektong Pangulo ng Pilipinas, pero masasabi ko na si Pnoy ay taos puso niyang pinaglilingkuran ang ating bayan.
