It was mentioned somewhere in the film (or in Thor's movie) that just because Thor is from another world and possess superhuman skills, humans thought of him as a god (thus, your Norse mythology). Technically, along with Loki and the Chitauri, Thor is an extraterrestrial. A very delicious one at that.

I'm no Marvel comic reader, but that's how I understood the Marvel films. It's not so hard if you pay attention to the dialogue.
