B-MEG REGAINS UPPERHAND
B-Meg hardly showed discouragement from its sorry Game Two defeat, coming out Friday night with a
renewed energy and outlasting Talk n Text, 91-87, in a nip-and-tuck battle for the 2-1 advantage in
the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.
Denzel Bowles best typified the character displayed by the Llamados, bucking early foul trouble
situation to put B-Meg back in the lead in the series.
Bowles, cinch to win the Best Import award Sunday, powered his way to 28 points, including 10 he
made after having picked a fifth foul with 5:58 left to play.
He personally kept the Tropang Texters at bay with four important foul shots at the finish.
“He’s a mature young man at 22,” said B-Meg coach Tim Cone to end all his praises to his
import for this particular game watched by a crowd of over 14,000 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Denzel came back with a monster game. He made the big shots. He showed maturity, not picking up
his sixth foul until only four seconds left in the game,” Cone said earlier.
James Yap, Josh Urbiztondo and PJ Simon were also right there in the battle for B-Meg, combining for
an impressive 10-of-18 three-point shooting.
“We really tried to be right-minded, approaching it as Game One of the finals, not Game Three. The
guys did a good job doing that, showing no discouragement from Game Two,” said Cone.
Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes, meanwhile, took Jimmy Alapag and Ranidel de Ocampo to task for their
Game Three loss.
We’re not gonna beat B-Meg unless Ranidel and Jimmy came back from their early vacation,”
said Reyes.
“Josh Urbiztondo and Marc Pingris were disabusing Jimmy and Ranidel. Ranidel didn’t even take a
single two-point shot. Jimmy couldn’t make his shots. That’s too much load for Ryan Reyes and
Jayson Castro to carry,” Reyes added.
Donnell Harvey, Reyes, Castro and Ali Peek carried the cudgels for the Texters as they fought the
Llamados through 10 deadlocks and 17 lead changes before losing it in the end.
The Texters were fighting to salvage the game when Bowles canned in four important charities in the
last 23 seconds.
Bowles had given B-Meg a four-point lead at 90-86 when he eventually fouled out, baited by Alapag
while taking a three-point attempt with 4.9 ticks left.
Talk n Text’s chance didn’t improve as Alapag muffed his first charity.
He knocked in the second one and deliberately missed the third, hoping Talk n Text get the offensive
rebound for a chance to tie from beyond the arc.
But Rafi Reavies cleared the board to settle the outcome of the game.
“We can beat them with a full roster not with a depleted lineup,” insisted Reyes.
De Ocampo took only two field goal attempts – both from beyond the arc -- in 23 minutes of action
while Alapag bled for his points on 2-of-13 shooting.
Clamping down on one another on defense, the Llamados edged the Texters, 37-36, at the turn – the
lowest scoring first half in the series.
It was a tight first-half battle with neither team leading by more than five.
The Llamados were holding a five-point margin at 36-31 before Peek and Reyes gave the Texters a 5-1
windup to make it a one-point game at halftime.
The Llamados found a good rhythm at the start of the third quarter, opening a 59-52 lead, but the
Texters were quick to make a countermove, racing ahead, 64-62, going into the final canto. (SB)
