Were you able to prove that the stories were half-true? The Flash was and is still considered the best Filipino boxer. The hype and publicity that the pacman is receiving right now was not available to the Flash back then. Communications technology were very limited, international fights were not shown live if it were even shown at all.
i ve been a boxing fan since highschool and my father often told me stories how great was flash elorde. he said that elorde knocks out most of his opponents. he said that in his fight with terou kosaka here in cebu, flash elorde beat kosaka brutally that after the fight kosaka was rushed to the velez became blind. i believed those stories coz i also heard it from many people. but when the internet was available for me, i found out that flash elorde is not a knock out artist. he won his bouts mostly in our country and often loose outside our country. and also i found out that terou kosaka didnt became blind after his fight with elorde in cebu colesium because they have 2 more fights after that bout. thats the problem of communication before. people rely mostly on newpapers and could not verify the stories unlike now. flash elorde was a big celebrity before even though his accomplishmets are not as great as pacman's that's why ive conclude that he was overrated and overhyped. but i still consider him as one of the best boxers that came from our country

You got your facts wrong. First, it was a fight here in the Philippines. Secondly, the fans didn't walk-out. People were expecting a long fight, so most of the audience delayed their arrival to the arena, but The Flash knocked the opponent out on the 2nd or 3rd round which almost caused a riot since people started clamoring for a refund of their tickets.
ive read before from one of the boxing forums in eastsideboxing.com that during the fight between elorde and ortiz in the us, people were walking out during the fight because the fight was very boring and one sided. elorde was koed during the fight.

LOL...hasta ako mama agree that flash was a greater boxing personality than manny...

anyway, sakto na if himoan nila og statue and ibutang sa boxing gym or somewhere... sobraan ra kau na if ibutang sa baywalk.. murag funny... ang heroes sa mga filipinos will be pacman (boxer who defeated morales), fpj (greatest filipino action hero), and some other juan who bowled a perfect 300 game in the world bowling olympics??

heroes are for GREAT people with GREAT achievements... katawan lang cgro ta sa mga foreigners kung ma ingana ra intawun ato heroes..

putting Pacman on the same sentence with the likes of Ali, Joe Louis and Sugar Ray is somewhat half-baked and ill-advised. let's come back to earth and use some common sense here.
i didnt say that pacman has achieved that status. what im saying is that pacman has a very big potiential to be an all time great and he's almost there even at his young age. if he continues to beat legends, then he will surely arrive there

"superstar status in the world"? the Philippines and Mexico isn't exactly the "WORLD". some Americans, like the HBO analysts knows a lot about Pacman, some American sports bettors knows about him but those 3 countries mentioned isn't exactly the "WORLD". and to tell you honestly, Mexicans born in the US doesn't really give a rats-arse about boxing. ask them about soccer, ask them about American Football and I'll tell you, they know more about those sports mentioned than "BOXING".
im not the only one who said that pacman is a superstar. imo, every boxing website has articles about him, sometimes fans get annoyed in boxing forums because so many boxing sportswriters wants to write a piece about him and most of the articles has the line "the filipino boxing superstar". some mexicans may have lots knowledge about football and soccer but i dont think they dont know who julio ceasar chavez, barrera or morales are.

On the bad side, basin ma inspired ang atoang mga bata to drop out from school and take boxing instead...that would be bad for our country...hehehe..................

"pacman has a very big potential" just like how you coined that phrase, it doesn't merit a statue. please take note of your statement: it's laden with "if", "almost", "will surely arrive". you're not even sure if Pacman is already at that "status" and here you are supporting the move of making a statue for him.

I do have a question I wanna ask, does "potential" merit a "statue"?

here's the catch: "every BOXING website"...

if you visit ESPN, MSN Sports, Sports Illustrated or any other sports website that doesn't have the word "boxing" on the title, you'll never see a "boxing" tab unless you click "more sports". you know why? 'coz boxing is "no longer" one of the "most watched" sport. it has fallen from grace a long long time ago. sports radio, sports TV segments in countries excluding Mexico and the Phils don't even mention boxing anymore not unless something weird happens like when Tyson bit Holyfield's ear.

if Pacman's face will grace the home pages of those websites (that doesn't have "boxing" in the title) at least twice then by all means put his statue wherever you want. if Pacman's face graces the cover of Sports Illustrated then that would mean he has arrived. but if not, then maybe he is not the "superstar" you thought "the world" saw him. maybe he never was..

so... are you still putting a statue for Pacman RIGHT NOW?
Shut Up! Let your GAME do the talking!

okay, now i think erwin_rommel acknowledges the fact that pacman isn't the world's greatest boxer ever YET...he is just popular at this time...and erwin is just a great fan. i kinda sympathize with him na coz if we put ourselves in his shoes, we'd think our idol is the best...it doesn't matter what others think coz to us, that idol has made a great impact on us. so pacman is good...great...and has even greater potential. and he has unified the filipinos in a way. i hate boxing, but i cant deny manny is an influential figure.

i guess the issue lang jud is whether it's sensible to put up a manny statue. oh well, if our leaders (and people) think manny has helped the country, then go! but let's do the same for the other superstars in their own fileds. mao lagi to, sila lea salongga, efren bata reyes, etc. Pero murag kiwaw man uy statue pa jud. Oh well, whatever.

Having a statue by now would only add pressure in his future fights knowing his not yet retired. I feel that people will start throwing stones on the supposedly statue once he commits losses in his matches or do some acts against the law..I agree, the time to build one has not come yet..

pacman is already a great boxer( mayweather, delahoya, barrera, morales and most boxers in the top pound 4 pound are considered great boxers) . what i meant in his potential is an all time great status which is a level higher than being great. with this status, you will be an icon in boxing and you will be remembered and as long as the sport of boxing exists. flash elorde maybe considered as a great boxer in our country but internationally, some wont consider him as one. elorde should be thankful the the pacman because boxing fans outside our country had recognized him. before pacman hit big in the us, many boxing fans world wide didnt know that a boxer named flash elorde exisited before. boxers like espinosa, pancho villa and navarette are good in boxing but they have not achieved greatness. boxing fans in general consider them as journeymen( journeyman is a term in boxing that refers to good boxers that didnt achieve greatness boxers like buster douglas, hashim rahman are one of its examples ). i myself wont disagree if somebody will create a statue of a great boxer because its only what we've got that we can brag with anybody outside our country. maybe the next pacman will come out after a hundred years. again, lea salonga might have achieved greatness but very few care about broadway same goes to bowling coz its not in the mainstream. if you will brag about lea salonga outside our country and say to them that she won a tony, probably those people will ask you what tony and broadway is.

i agree with you bro that boxing is not as popular as before and many sports have overtaken it. you can blame it in today's weak heavyweight division. i also didnt say that pacman is a sports superstar but a boxing superstar. but mind you pacman may bring back boxing to its glory days. wouldnt that be great? it would be like the band korn which brought back heavy music in the mainstream for sometime but i hope it will last longer hehehe.

actually, im not against this lady blogger because she opposed the proposed statue of pacman in baywalk. im just against her disrespect, hatred and envy towards a person who did nothing to her, gave pride to our country, and gave boxing fans whats worth for their money. what enraged most of pacman's fans was her word "f@ckman and monkey pacquiao"( you can read it in her additional quotes in the responses). its just too much for many pacfans to accept. im not demanding that pacman should have a statue in baywalk but i also wont oppose if somebody will build one. i agree with some people here that its still preamature to build on in his honor because we still dont know what will happen to him in the future. if God forbids, pacman will die tomorrow i will be glad if a statue of him will be built in the baywalk. but still, i wont demand one

if that's the case, we should build statues for every filipino who makes it big abroad. we put it in the streets, park until all our roads are clogged by this statue.
