Ravena explodes as Ateneo takes Round 1
Anthony Divinagracia, Saturday, July 16, 2011.

Manila, Philippines – The “raven” among the Eagles devoured the Archers.

Kiefer Ravena rebounded from a miserable debut Saturday as he fired a team-high 24 points to cap a double-double performance and lead defending champion Ateneo over bitter rival La Salle, 81-72, in the 74th UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

“Zero points ako nung Adamson (game) kaya pumped up ako nung 6 straight points ko. I’m thankful to my teammates for finding me. Buti pumapasok tira ko,” said Ravena, who put his scoreless debut behind by tallying 22 of his entire output in the first half to put the Eagles ahead at the half, 41-31.

The former Blue Eaglet and National Team standout underscored his all-around play by grabbing 10 rebounds and picking up 5 steals. Ravena’s 22-point splurge was a rung short of matching the 23-point record of former UST Tiger and UAAP MVP Dylan Ababou who set the feat for the most number of points scored in the first half back on July 16, 2009.

Elevated into the starting line-up, Ravena went berserk from the get-go, netting three straight lay-ups plus against La Salle’s hulking frontline while actively involving himself on defense. He closed the opening quarter with a booming triple and a pair of charities to hand Ateneo a 21-14 separation.

“Kiefer played very well especially in the first half. He carried us offensively and gave us a push,” Ateneo coach Norman Black said of his prized recruit, who logged in 14 points in the first period alone.

Ravena’s energy slowly rubbed on to his teammates on the defensive end as the Eagles held the Archers without a field goal in a seven-minute span bridging the first and second quarters. La Salle broke the scoring drought only in the 6:33 mark of the second on Luigi Dela Paz’ go-ahead triple before Ravena and Ateneo made a killing anew.

“The Phenom” drained back-to-back baskets and fellow rookie Greg Slaughter went for a dunk to spark a 14-5 run that gave the Eagles their first double-digit margin, 39-29, heading into the break.

Ateneo’s veterans took the cudgels from Ravena come third quarter as Nico Salva, Kirk Long, and Eman Monfort ignited a 17-6 outburst to register the game’s highest lead at 58-39 with 2:48 left.

But the Archers refused to yield that easily and countered with a 10-4 blitz anchored on LA Revilla and Olan Tampus that narrowed the gap at 49-62, going into the payoff period.

La Salle patiently toiled on the offensive block to cut the lead by a single digit, 59-66, with 6:21 remaining. But Salva responded with a numbing triple with 2:22 left to restore the twin-digit spread, 75-64.

Still the Archers hanged on as Revilla and Tampus knocked in a jumper each and bigman Norbert Torres nailed a basket over Slaughter to push La Salle within five, 70-75, with 1:05 in the clock.

Yet that was the closest La Salle could get as the Archers succumbed to penalty and sorely missed the endgame leadership of team skipper Simon Atkins, who fouled out going into the final minute of the contest.

Monfort finalized the count from the stripe.

With the victory, Ateneo extended its head-to-head match-up win against La Salle to 32 games. La Salle however leads the count, winning 34 outings since 1986.

    The scores:

    ADMU 81 – Ravena 24, Salva 18, Monfort 10, Long 10, Slaughter 7, Golla 6, Tiongson 2, Gonzaga 2, Chua 2, Capacio 0, Sumalinog 0, Austria 0.

    DLSU 72 – Revilla 22, Tampus 10, Torres 9, de la Paz 9, Marata 9, Van Opstal 5, Villanueva 4, Mendoza 2, Atkins 2, Sara 0, Gotladera 0, Vosotros 0, Paredes 0, Webb 0.

    Quarterscores: 23-16, 41-30, 62-49, 81-72.
