Mas safe and proper jud ang "engine brake". Using clutch while braking is applicable only when you are driving at speeds below 20kph, in which braking while the gear is engaged will cause the engine to die at these speeds. When you are traveling at 40kph up (usually 2nd Gear and up), using clutch while braking is unsafe because you are only relying to the power of your brake in reducing your speed or putting your car to stop. This will cause your clutch lining and your brake pads to wear out fast.

    The importance of "Engine Brake"

Engine braking is a way to use the deceleration offered by your engine when the accelerator is depressed. Yes, your accelerator can also function as a decelerator. When you step on it you get your acceleration, when you depress it, you will have indeed you deceleration. And the amount of deceleration varies also proportionally with your gears, the lower the gear ratio, the higher amount of deceleration you will achieve. You can even use this to decelerate gradually by releasing the "accelerator pedal" gradually. With this knowledge and skill you can learn how to drive smoothly at speeds 120kph to 180kph at express ways. Or you can learn how to drive 80kph to 100kph at city streets with extreme acceleration and deceleration but not recommended.

Here are some additional driving tips:

    1. Change gear only at 2500 to 3000RPM.
Under Rev - will cause your gearbox to wear faster.
Over Rev - is not good for your engine and a waste of fuel.

    2. When overtaking, if you are running at speeds below 2000RPM, it is recommended to shift to the next lower gear to attain 2500RPM and accelerate up 3000RPM. Change to the next higher gear only after your car has completely passed the other car. This will reduce the amount of time you spend in passing the other car will offer you a safe overtaking habits. Passing with RPM below 2000RPM is very unsafe (you can do this when passing slow moving vehicles but it is not recommended) this will increase the amount of time you spend on the opposite lane.

usually 3rd gear man seguro if mag overtake ka kay mas kusgan man siya. pero depended ra gihapon sa imong paminaw if tan-aw nmo makaya ra nmo sa 4th gear or 5th gear pwede ra gihapon as long as dli ka maabtan sa imong sugat og dli sad ka ma alanganin sa imong gi overtake kan.

@0kimangel0: nice tips. new things to learn. thanks man...

being a clutch driver is always putting your left foot on the clutch even when not needed.

@joaquin: The gear is not the factor but rather the amount of revolution your engine have and you should also take into consideration the amount of acceleration your car can offer. The best practice is to get to know your car. e.g. A higher cylinder volume means higher acceleration (2.0L engine can accelerate faster than a 1.3L engine) Also if you are you using diesel engine with built in turbo features, you should be familiar on what RPM values does the turbo is enabled automatically.

@johnsital: You are most welcome bro. I wanted to share this because I myself was a clutch driver before when I used to drive within city limits only. I mastered the correct skills of driving when I was able to work at Manila (not to mention the driving conditions there esp. in EDSA,C5, and the worst is in Commonwealth Ave) and my work required me to drive all the way up to Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte and Isabela Province. I used to drive more than 1000km a week. This long trips required good and safe overtaking practices, especially when over taking 25 to 30 foot trailers on a zigzag road (crossing the Cagayan valley). You will learn how to overtake long slow moving vehicles with blind curves approaching ahead (drifting?hehehe).

OT: Btw fellow istoryans, one thing worth mentioning for Automatic vehicles is, sometimes have a misnomer that automatic vehicles have lower acceleration compared with their manual counterparts; because in manual we have the option to increase the amount of acceleration by changing to the next lower gear. But what most of the automatic vehicle users don't know is that we can also make the vehicle to switch to the next lower gear especially when overtaking with RPM's less than 2000RPM. We can achieve this by stepping on the accelerator pedal until it reach the maximum or 100% setting, this will make the vehicle switch to the next lower gear. You can then have the vehicle to automatically switch to the next higher gear by releasing the accelerator slightly at about 75% setting after you have passed the other vehicle.

    Hope this helps.

clutch driver or not, just be safe when you drive,.true that replacing your clutch lining is not cheap, but dont be too conscious when youre still new to driving manual trans, basin practice2x ka diha unya mag sige nuon ka kapagngan, get to know your car first..
it doesnt mean if nakapatung imong tiil sa clutch mahilis ang imung clutch lining,NOT TRUE!. Mahilis rana if magsige kag tamak all the way down even if its not necessary.,if you were a clutch driver before and pirmi nakatamak imu tiil sa clutch, practice not applying pressure to the clutch bisag nakapatung ang tiil, that way dili mahilis ang lining and then la kaayo take pressure and pressure plate..your feet doesnt really have to be on the floor..
