BK’s Santos traded to San Miguel
The suspense over the future of Arwind Santos is over after Burger King finally dealt its prolific forward to San Miguel Beer in exchange for three players.
The 6-foot-4 Santos has been the subject of trade the past two weeks but Lito Alvarez, the Whopper’s team governor and the incoming PBA chairman, only confirmed it on Tuesday after both parties sealed the negotiation Monday night.
In return, Burger King, according to Alvarez, got power forward Marc Pingris and sophomore Ken Bono, a 6-foot-6 center.
BK also got San Miguel’s first round pick in the 2010 PBA Rookie Draft.
“The reason lang na-tagalan itong negotiation is we want a draft pick, not a player sa package because we already have 17 players including the three picks we’ll have in this Sunday’s Draft,” Alvarez told the Bulletin. Santos was the first round pick of the Bert Lina-owned franchise (second overall) in the 2006 Draft.
Pingris was also an original member of the team being the third overall pick in the Draft four seasons back. He played for one season for the team before being shipped to Purefoods. He was then traded to San Miguel last year.
Bono, a one-time UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP), first played for Alaska before he was traded to SMB.
Meantime, as far as Burger King coach Yeng Guiao is concerned, choosing Japeth Aguilar as the top overall selection in the PBA Rookie Draft is a no-brainer.
“As a coach, that’s a no-brainer. Japeth is the No. 1 pick and he’s going to dominate the league in one or two years as soon as he gains his basketball instincts and improve his judgement,” Guiao said on Tuesday.
“In terms of athletic ability, I think wala ma-match sa kanya, either now or before. Wala pang malaking bigman na may ganung klaseng athleticism,” he added.

Busy week for hot PBA prospect Aguilar
07/28/2009 | 11:19 AM
Sought-after amateur cager Japeth Aguilar has a busy week ahead of him.
Without the benefit of a rest while training with the Powerade-Team Pilipinas, the 22-year-old Western Kentucky University stalwart will also be taking part in the annual PBA Rookie Camp, a three-day activity all 53 applicants are required to undergo prior to the August 2 Rookie Draft at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig.
Aguilar arrived Monday with the rest of the Nationals from Taipei where they competed in the 31st William Jones Cup tournament. The team limped home with only two wins to show in eight games.
Japeth Aguilar, left, slams it home for Team Pilipinas in the recent Jones Cup tournament in Taipei.Exactly 24 hours upon arrival, Aguilar and the Nationals readily plunged into practice session, barely a week before they leave for Tianjin, China and see action in the 25th FIBA-Asia men’s basketball championship.
Also on Tuesday, Aguilar participates in the first of the three-part Rookie Camp at the Club 650 gym in Libis, Quezon City, where all rookie hopefuls will be subjected to scrutiny in terms of physical aspect, skills and strength evaluation as well as basketball drills.
All the 53 aspirants had been split into four teams and will play in the two-day, eight-game schedule at the Caruncho gym in Pasig City from July 30-31.
Aguilar spearheads Group A (yellow) along with Pharex stalwarts Ronnie Matias, Sean Co and Josh Urbiztondo, while PBL MVP Chris Ross, Roel Hugnatan and 2007 UAAP MVP Jervy Cruz spearhead Group B (white).
San Beda star Ogie Menor, La Salle stalwart Rico Maierhofer, Far Eastern University guard Benedict Fernandez and Oracle guard Chris Timberlake stand at the forefront of Group C (blue), while Group D (red) is led by University of the East’s Marcy Arellano, Jose Rizal University’s James Sena and Kevin White, reportedly related to Alapag.
On the first day of play, Group 1 clashes with Group 3 in the first game at 2 p.m., while Group 2 battles Group 4 at 4 p.m.
The final day of the camp is a crossover double header between Group 1 vs. Group 2 (2 p.m.) and Group 3 vs. Group 4 (4 p.m.).
Failure to attend the camp would automatically scratch the applicant from the final list of rookie picks to be announced by PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios on July 31. - GMANews.TV
