I came across this classic erotica back in the day, the works of Marquis de Sade and although I might consider the work as literature it sure down there in the slimy dregs of pornography. I'm not well verse in this genre so I can't speak for every publication but this genre gains popularity through its shocking or sensational substance not because of how good it's contents truly are.
Yes, Marquis de Sade gained popularity and acclaim not because of the beauty of the prose but rather on the shock factor it brought upon a conservative society.
Erotica really serves no purpose nor destination. It merely tries to stir the reader's psyche. Kumbaga, we are forced to think about something that has no substance in the first place. In the end, its just porn, not literature.
It depends.
What is the artist/author's intent?
If it is to use *** as a metaphor or as a device to tell a story, like say, a story about infidelity or sexual discovery. It's more erotica.
If it's used to tantalize the senses and arouse the reader, then it leans more to porn.
It overlaps to some degree, and in the end, it's up to the reader on how to interpret and the intention of the author about the story.
ahahah its better to try some right?
they say, the mind is the largest s3x organ.. gone this far in my readings, i admit.

I find erotica in literature more fascinating, may be because it is aimed to wake some emotions, not just instincts. But when it comes to movies and any visual content, I prefer po*n and webcam shows , just because light erotica looks fake on the screen, just my opinion.
