Against street fights, a combination of combat aikido and kuntaw will stand a chance.
Thats good you survived, thats all its about in my mind, so you must have done something right, but again you where also two against one from your story and i dont know the details.....
Lucky for you that it was a situation where you, where able to apply BJJ on the street......
I think a streetwise selfdefense is something that learns the student to improvise and adapt both standing and on the ground and with/without weapons, i also think it should think "combat like" and take stuff like "sucker punch" into account.....
I know we have all the above and much more, you wont find in BJJ (or its like), since our style are made for real combat not sports....
But yes you are right training is good...

for me i will strike the balls if my opponent is a boy. if it will be a girl and shes an experience fighter i will strike her breasts.. kuyaw pud ug sexual harassment..hahahaha.. If not a martial artist i will just hug her tight until she will wrap her arms around me and then................... who knows....hehehehe..
For me, even if im a taekwondo x-taekwondo instructor but still practice the art and sport, any martial can be used in any setuation, cus it doesnt really matters on the art itself but the practitioner.
Maybe your in the best/ strongest martial which none, but your not learning it very will then its still useless
I think its about both the style, the teacher and the student.....
The style is what you learn and if its useful.....
The teacher is the one who should teach it so you understand it......
But as the student you also needs to be dedicated towards the style, this will make you a better student and learn faster....
