About the Patriarch of VTI, Ricardo Yanson...inspiring story as well...

La Salle honors Yanson Sunday (March 14, 2004)
WITH DOCTORS OF LAWS DEGREE, HONORIS CAUSA
The biggest bus operator in the Philippines will be bestowed a Doctor of Laws degree, Honoris Causa, by the University of Saint La Salle in Bacolod City tomorrow.

Ricardo B. Yanson, 74, is the president of Vallacar Transit Inc. that operates Ceres buses in the islands of Panay, Negros, the southern part of Cebu, part of Leyte and Samar and approximately two-thirds of the whole island of Mindanao, with 7,000 employeestraveling an average of 15 million kilometers per month.

By opening new routes for public transportation, we not only provide reliable and comfortable service for the riding public, we boost the economy of the areas our buses pass through, Yanson said.

Yanson's success in the transportation business did not come to him on a silver platter, he worked to get to where he is today.

He was born in Valladolid, Negros Occidental on July 2, 1929 to Enrique Yanson, a teacher and farmer who later ventured into small fishing, and Asuncion Buerom, an elementary school teacher.

My sister Violeta, and I started our primary schooling at Barrio Palaca, Pulupandan, walking barefooted along the rice paddies to get to school everyday, he said.

When it rained, we had to run since the rice paddies were slippery, and many times we got home wet and shivering with muddy feet, he said. It was a learning experience, which molded us to be strong and steadfast, he said.

Yanson then went on to study at the Negros Occidental High School and later went to the University of the Philippines in Manila where he obtained a fisheries degree in 1952.

"My first job was as a fishery technician and I had to go with fishing boats and supervise the making of fishnets," he said.

In two years, he was promoted to assistant general manager, he said.

"From my meager salary I was able to save some money to buy one jeepney in 1957, and in five years time I was operating 30 units.

In 1959, Yanson married Olivia Villaflores, a nurse and classmate of his sister at Silliman University, with whom he has six children.

Together with his wife, Yanson said, he started assembling jeepneys, like Sarao and Francisco Motors. "Our assembled jeepneys sold like hotcakes because they were of better quality and cheaper than the ones made in Manila," he said.

However, with the coming of the Ford Fiera their sales went down and he was forced to switch to operating big buses. He said his father had started Vallacar Transit because they operated in Valladolid and La Carlota and named their buses Ceres after his sister.

He said his father and sisters sold him the business so he could expand it and have a free hand in its management

"It was not an easy task because we were competing with the existing and well-established operators, but because of patience, perseverance and strong determination, we were able to buy out almost all of them," he said.

In the mid-1970's Vallacar Transit ventured into Mindanao and we were threatened with bankruptcy because we were up against big competitors but we hurdled our initial difficulties, he said.

Today Yanson does not only operate buses, he said Vallacar Transit has a fully-integrated operation.

Vallacar has recapping plants, has a machine shop that manufactures brake linings, batteries and spare parts, a facility for chassis and bus body assembly, he said.

Recently Vallacar also established a foundry shop division that manufactures brake drums. Vallacar is also the only one in the Philippines that has a computerized 4-wheel alignment for buses and a computerized engine dynamometer to scientifically check engine performance, he said.

All of these are designed in order to lower our cost of operation and at the same time operate efficient and reliable buses for the safety and comfort of the riding public, Yanson said.

Today, Yanson's son, Roy Yanson, is executive vice president and chief operating officer of Vallacar Transit, while his wife is chairman of the board.

For Yanson's vision and business acumen, the University of Saint La Salle will honor him this Sunday with a doctor of laws degree, honoris causa. USLS cites Yanson for being a "distinguished leader in the public transportation business; patron of education through public school centers and scholarship programs, and a generous benefactor of medical missions and apostolates."*CPG

Murag si Chavit ang owner then gigamit niya as campaign props iyang bus line.
