love does not fade, it matures.

at the start, love is fire. your eyes can't see anything but the object of your affection. they speak to you, all you hear are harps and angels singing. you can't stand to be apart from them.

after a few months, your eyes clear up and you see the flaws of your beloved. your ears hear their words without any adornment, plain and clear. you begin to realize that life must go on, even when you are in love and some parts of life require you to be apart.

a few months more pass and you realize that love is a burden, a chore. you have to accept that your beloved is flawed and that, whether these flaws are corrected or not, it is not up to you but up to them and you have to love them in any case. you have to do things that you do not want because your beloved wants to do these things and wants you to share their enjoyment with you. you realize that life may be more interesting if they were not around.

then one day you suspect that you don't really love this person you are with. you can't figure out why you got together with them in the first place. you might even go so far as to end the relationship.

this is the test of love. if at this point it ends, then it probably wasn't love. it maybe lust, maybe infatuation, who knows.

however, if you get past this point without losing that loving feeling, you finally see what love is. it really is a fire. it burns but you cannot let it burn on its own. you and your beloved need to stoke the fire, feed it with your life and carry it in your soul, with you always. then you'll see it in each other every day of your lives. that's mature love.
