Paul Pierce said it. He meant it. And he still means it. The Boston Celtics small forward/guard recently was asked by a Spanish publication whether he thought Kobe Bryant was the best player in the world. Pierce said no. The NBA Finals MVP called himself the "best player." He added, "There's a line that separates having confidence and being conceited. I don't cross that line, but I have a lot of confidence in myself." On Thursday, Pierce stood by his comments, saying he is entitled to his opinion. "That's what I said. I am a confident player and a lot of people might look at it like 'Oh, another cocky attitude,' but I don't look at it that way," said Pierce. "I have an opinion, I have a right to have one and that's the way I feel. I felt I've played against the best over the years and felt right now that I'm the best player in the world."

Paul Pierce handcuffed in Vegas


Paul Pierce didn’t put his foot in his mouth again. No, this time Pierce digested something of the alcoholic variety and it got him in trouble with the Las Vegas police.

The Boston Celtics’ star was handcuffed by police early Sunday after he initially was uncooperative following a traffic stop for driving erratically on the Strip, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Bill Cassell, public information officer for the Metropolitan Police Department, said he did not have details why Pierce was cuffed but said it often happens when “an individual is loudly hostile.”

He no doubt was reminding the police who was the “best player in the world.“

Pierce, a forward who is 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 235 pounds, “rapidly calmed down,” and police removed the handcuffs after about 15 minutes, Cassell said.

“We find this happens a lot of times,” Cassell said. “Someone is a little agitated, and when they’re placed in handcuffs, they rethink things.”

The traffic stop occurred around 3 a.m. near Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue, Cassell said.

Officers gave Pierce field sobriety tests and a Breathalyzer showed the player registered below the 0.08 level that defines legal intoxication in Nevada.

Police did not cite Pierce for a traffic infraction.
