RP Youth team leaves for Iran

The Nokia-Philippine Youth team leaves for Tehran, Iran today hoping to end a long title-drought in the FIBA-Asia Basketball Championship for Junior Men set on Aug. 28 to Sept. 5.

Despite facing an uphill battle to reclaim the country’s long lost glory in the tough tournament, the Nationals, composed of collegiate cagers aged 18 years old and under, are confident of putting up a decent show this time around.

"Everybody is excited and healthy. This is going to be a great experience for the boys and we all hope that things will turn out well," said RP coach Franz Pumaren, who is likely to miss two games of the La Salle Archers in the UAAP during the duration of the Asian Youth tourney.

Pumaren, however, added the campaign would be tougher than it seems since they have no knowledge about the strength of their rivals.

"Except for Taiwan, we have no idea of the other teams (in our bracket). It’s going to be a great challenge for us, but the boys will certainly have to work hard," said Pumaren.

The Nationals are bracketed in Group C along with Lebanon and United Arab Emirates.

Defending champion China leads Hong Kong, India and Japan in Group A, while last year’s runner-up Korea, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan and Jordan are bracketed in Group B.

Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Syria and host Iran make up the Group D.

The RP Youth squad earned a berth in the tournament after sweeping the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Championship last May in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The country last won the Asian crown in 1982, when the team, headed by Hector Calma, beat China.

TEHRAN (FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Junior Men): Last edition’s semifinalists Chinese Taipei and former champions Philippines waged a protracted battle before the latter emerged victorious 106-105, in the second Overtime in a Group C encounter here on Thursday.

Philippines went ahead 28-16 at the end of the first quarter, but that was the only time in the entire game did any team manage to hold a sizable lead.


Taipei fought back gallantly to outscore Philippines in all the three remaining quarters. The East Asian nation, who had finished fourth at Urumqi two year ago, went into the lead for the first time in the game (78-76) only with 3:15 left in the game.

The battle of nerves continued as both sides fumbled in the final moments to seal the issue in regulation.

After the first five minutes of extended time failed to break the dead-lock, Taipei raced ahead 104-98 riding on Lee Ming-Hui’s back-to-back baskets.

But Philippines fought back to regain the lead when Gabriel Banal converted both his free-throws.

“I think both of us (teams) lost chances to close the game in regulation,” said Philippines coach Franz Pumaren.

“It was a test of character for the boys. I’m happy they held together rather well,” he added.

Philippines went into the first Overtime with four players ejected due to personal fouls and were even worse off at the start of the second extension with six forced to sit out.

“I’m proud of the way my bench rose to the occasion,” Pumaren said.

“I must also give credit to the Taipei team for the way they came back,” he added.

“I’m proud of my boys for the way they fought back,” said Taipei coach Yang I-Feng.

“I hope the boys take the lessons from this game into the next matches in the tournament,” said Chung Kwang-Suk, the head coach of the Taipei Senior men’s team, but in Tehran as the General Manager of the U18 squad.

TEHRAN (FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Junior Men):

Former champions Philippines were stretched into two Overtimes before scraping past Chinese Taipei 106-105 in a Group C preliminary round game on the opening day of the 20th FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Junior Men on Thursday.

In other action, Asia’s young basketball talent was on display to the best possible measure, with the reputation of their rivals having no bearing on the performance of the youngsters.

Defending champions China began the proceedings for the Championship mauling Hong Kong China 115-61 in Group A and Jordan followed suit to outplay Saudi Arabia 110-83 in Group B. Lebanon brought down the curtain for the day late into the night with a runaway 76-61 win over United Arab Emirates.

The rest of the games saw some interesting action, albeit only for some moments in some of them.

Kazakhstan almost pulled off a win against last edition’s runners-up Korea in Group B before succumbing to a nervy ending. Korea won 65-62, in a game which their coach Lee Hyosang termed as “a good way start our campaign for the bigger battles ahead.”

India burnt the candle from both the ends only to loosen grip later and lose to Japan 71-96 in Group A.

Malaysia threatened hosts Iran with their enthusiasm early before, Iran hit back with full force. Iran romped to a 29-1 scoring spree in the fourth quarter to emerge victorious by 102-61.

The Philippines-Taipei would certainly be remembered for rest of the championship. And for both the youngsters in both the teams showing the character to fight back when the chips were down.

Taipei went into the lead only with 3:15 left in the game, as a result of the tremendous grit to bridge the gap on every single opportunity, especially after trailing 16-28 at the end of the first quarter.

And Philippines displayed nerves of steel to fight back in both the Overtimes – from 88-92 to square the first Overtime at 96 – and coming back from 98-104 in the second before clinching the issue.

With such action on what would have been considered a routine opening day – to provide some warm-up games for the fancied sides – the rest of the championship is sure to witness some exciting moments.

Lebanon had trailed throughout till the start of the fourth quarter when a 13-3 run saw them surge ahead 74-69. Philippines fought back to level the scores at 77-77 with 2:47 left in the game.

Thereafter the game hung in balance when with about 20 seconds left Philippines’ Mathew Wright in his anxiety to score, committed a charge.

Lebanon played the ball into Ibrahim, who swerved on top the arc before unleashing the match winner.

“Everything in that play went according to plan, only that he (Ibrahim) chose to shoot from outside instead of driving in,” Lebanon coach Rizkallah Zaloum said.

“Sometimes not listening to the coach helps,” he chuckled.

For the first time in over a decade, The RP Youth team has landed safely into the winners bracket when they dealt UAE its 3rd defeat by a convincing 19 point margin. Two things were absolutely crucial today here at 20th FIBA ASIA Junior men contest for the Nokia-backed RP team to stay in contention; Firstly, The Philippines must win their game against UAE. And second, Lebanon must win over Chinese Taipei. The first condition was within the boys control. The second was beyond. “It lays in the hands of Divine Providence” said acting-team manager Joel Lopa – here representing TAO Corp. prexy Jun Sy who is currently out of the country to attend to important matters.

Lebanon did pulverize Chinese Taipei 95 to 80 in the earlier match intent on disproving any speculation that their win against the RP boys was a “fluke of a referee’s whistle”. And the pinoys came up with their most consistent performance yet in these prelims as they attacked unrelentingly, never giving UAE a chance to taste the lead in the entirety of the game. However, after the RP-UAE tussle, Coach R. Zaloum was seen shaking Franz Pumaren’s hand in congratulations and saying something to the RP Youth mentor which later, Pumaren revealed was; “You and your team tru

The Nokia-RP Youth boys suffered a defeat in the hands of a blindingly-fast Korean national youth team at the opening of the quarterfinal round here at the FIBA ASIA U-18 Championships in Tehran.

Maturity and cohesiveness showed its invaluable worth as Korea who, according to FIBA Asia Media Manager Mageshwaran Saba, “have been playing together as a team for well over two years” gave our boys the runaround throughout all four quarters.

The Philippine 5 (formed only last February of this year) gave a valiant effort to withstand Korea’s onslaught even taking the lead several times in the first quarter. The last time at 21-23 on Jaypee Mendoza’s defiant follow-up with 33.02 seconds left. He fell to the floor and appeared dazed thus missing an opportunity to make the extra point on freethrow. A buzzer-beating 3-pointer by #10 J. Lim closed out the period at 23-24.

The opening minutes of the 2nd quarter saw Korea’s lead widen by 10 points 41-31 courtesy of Lim and #5 J. Jang who peppered the Pinoys with 3-point bombs from all angles. At the end of 10 minutes the scoreboard read 50-39.

#4 J. Park combined with Lim contributing mostly from under the basket to up Korea’s lead to 19 (65-46) halfway through the 3rd period. An over-the-head “no-look” pass by #11 D. Lee to #8 H. Kim who converted that pass into 2 points embodied the solidity of this Korean youth team that many in this tournament aspire to achieve.

Asked to comment on the game, Coach Franz Pumaren said “our team’s flat start gave Korea the momentum that they rode all the way to the end. Korea played their best game tonight. And we played our worst. We will do better if we get a chance to play them again.” Our young warriors fought defiantly all the way to the last beat of the clock bringing down Korea’s 29 point lead to only 18. But time ran out on them and on that last tick, the scoreboard read; 98-80.

The Philippines will now have to win both its scheduled games against Japan and Hometown favorite Iran to qualify into the semis.

PHI / IRI – Philippines salvage pride with win over Iran



TEHRAN (FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Men): Philippines staged superb rallies twice to pip hosts Iran 85-84 in a Group II game of mere academic interest.

The defeat did no damage to Iran’s claim to the Group toppers position, while for the passionate Philippines, it was salvaging for many fans back home.

Iran, expectedly, were not at full blast.

Emad Salmani, who had averaged a staggering 16.75 points per game in four games for Iran was rested.

Yet Iran, seemed to have cantered ahead after Philippines had fought back to level the scores at half-time.

A 15-2 run midway through the fourth quarter, Iran surge ahead 79-64, but Philippines hit back with Matthew Wright drive down the lane following Ryan Garcia’s 3-pointer bringing them close to 78-79.

Farbod Farman powered his way under the board and moments later his three-point play put Iran 84-78 ahead.

Garcia, effected a steal after Farman had tapped the ball away to a Joseph Tolentino lay-up and shot from just outside the arc and Tolentino came up with powerful drive in the lane to bring Philippines close 81-84.

Frank Golla’s three-point play put Philippines ahead and De Guzman converted one of his two free-throws to seal the victory.

Garcia and Farman shared the scoring honours for the game with 19 points each.
