in defense of Gabriela, here are exerpts of Rep. Liza Maza's priveledge speech delivered at the Congress on Feb. 7.

please do justice, ladies and gentlemen, if indeed their exhortations do not have some basis on facts.

Mr. Speaker, the tragedy bespeaks clearly of the dire straits that Filipino women and their families live with from day to day. Poverty, they say, has a womans face. Ang kalagayan ng kababaihan ang pinakamainan na larawan ng sitwasyon ng bansa. Ang nangyaring trahedya sa Ultra na kumitil sa buhay ng maraming kababaihan noong Sabado ay malinaw na patotoo nito.

Masisisi ba natin ang Wowowee at ang ABS-CBN na nagpakulo ng programa? Maaaring may pananagutan sila sa nangyari dahil sa kakulangan ng mga paghahanda at kahinaan sa pagsaalang-alang ng ibat ibang konsiderasyon para matiyak ang seguridad ng mga manonood. Maaring may pananagutan sila sa pagsasamantala sa kahirapan para manalo sa ratings war. Naging katakam-takam ang mga premyong ginawang pain ng programa para makakuha ng mas maraming tagapagtangkilik.

Pero sino nga naman ang hindi magtataya ng lahat-lahat na kung walang-wala ka? Sinong nanay ang hindi magsasakripisyo at magbibigay ng buhay para sa kinabukasan ng kanyang mga anak? Sinong makapipigil sa mga kababaihang dumagsa sa Ultra? Masisisi ba natin sila?

Batid ng lahat na ang punot dulo ng trahedya sa Ultra ay ang malalang kahirapan sa ating bayan ngayon. Kahit araw-araw na ipagmalaki ng gobyernong Arroyo na humuhusay na raw ang ekonomya dahil sa papataas na halaga ng piso na umabot na sa P51.91 kada dolyar, naghuhumiyaw naman ang katotohanan na wala itong halaga sa mamayan dahil patuloy tayong nagbabayad ng mahal, at mas pinamahal pa ng EVAT na halaga ng asukal, gatas, bigas, karne, isda, de lata, pamasahe, LPG.

...Para sa kapakanan ng pamilya, hindi nakakapagtakang kababaihan rin ang nagkandarapang makipag-agawan, hindi para sa pagkain, hindi para sa pera, kundi para sa isang tiket na magbibigay ng napakaliit na pagkakataong mabigyang alwan ang kanilang mga buhay. Mr. Speaker, they were scampering not for food but for the one in a million chance to be able to feed their families and to live decent lives. What depths of depravation have our mothers, grandmothers, daughters and sisters been driven to by poverty?

We in this chamber cannot lie complacent and leave the responsibility to a television network or to a task force that will merely dole out grocery bags, transportation allowances and then blame the lack of security, the lack of preparation or even worse, the lack of discipline of those at Ultra for the tragedy.

The 13th Congress, at having passed the 10-12% EVAT increase while maintaining education, health and social services budget at a minimum at the prodding of President Arroyo, is partly to blame for the desperation and poverty that brought on the Ultra tragedy.

Mr. Speaker, distinguished colleagues, the Arroyo government cannot wash its hands off any responsibility for this tragedy. The lopsided economic policies that cater to the interest of a few but spawn massive poverty for our people drive our women to play this game of chance. There is no doubt to the Arroyo governments accountability in implementing policies that has perpetuated the poverty, driving our people to unspeakable depths of desperation.

I do understand all sides, but lets not point a finger on just one person.. It's tough times for our country and we're all affected by this tragedy and that everyone agrees it wouldn't have happened had these people been freed from the cycle of poverty..

These people played the game of chance.. just like evryone else but in a diffrent kind of way.. We may not know it, but we're always playing it. No one can understand why the tragedy had to happen or why.. But it's best not to add dirty politics to an already desperate situation..

guys the Left does not blame GMA directly for what happened. if that is what you read on the papers, then it is because a headline that would read "Left blames GMA for poverty" will simply not sell.

what the Left is trying to impress is that the current state of social misery is highly dependent on the economic policies that this administration passes; the very same social misery that is the impetus for throngs of people to go and join gameshows like Wowowee. in effect, the administration has it's share of blame, though not directly, at what happened.

i hope we read in between the lines, and the whole story in context, and not just form an opinion based on a haphazard and distorted headline.

bai gareb...what has the stampede got to do with womens right or their cause in general?..that was a clear accident, although there was a negligence among the involve parties..but ABS & the government are doing what they can to help the victims specially women and children.

funny while i was watching a news program, there was a flash report about the incident. and while the reporter gave updates, there was this guy behind her holding sumthing that says "ang pangyayari sa ultra ay kagagawan ni PGMA."
