That was the first time I've seen the Sacred Heart team in action (and the CEC team as well) and it was impressive how they were able to stave off the CEC rally despite having their 2 star big men foul out + having a bunch of their key players getting cramped up and hurt. I think they really grew up in that game and they will go all the way to win it. I wanted to see how Asilum plays though, hopefully he'll be around for the Finals (and hopefully maka-tan.aw sad unta ko).
Last time I saw UV play (live) was in the PCCL when they went up against Mapua. When I watched yesterday's match with SWU, lahi-a na sa ilang duwa oi. The signature UV swagger was non-existent nya di na kaayo sila mu-run and gun. Wa silay sinaligan, si Lao di na kaayo effective without another big man in the middle. Di ko ganahan sa sistema ni Belano, murag lala ug ya-ya kaayo sila hehe. Lig-on sad gyud nuon ang SWU. After the 1st Q it was clear that UV was done for so we left at the end of the 1st half. May gani nindot ang duwa sa Jrs. at least na-sulit ra ang admission.
CEC Dragons banished from title race
Sun.Star Digital Editions
AFTER playing second fiddle to the Cebu Eastern College Dragons (CEC), the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles have finally exacted revenge against rival school and defending high school champions.
The Eagles knocked the Dragons out of title contention last night in their heated semifinal clash in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament at the jam-packed Cebu Coliseum.
CEC swept SHS-AdC in last year’s high school championships, but this time around, the Dragons won’t be defending its crown after its journey ended with an 82-76 loss.
Although SHS-AdC had a twice to beat advantage in the semifinals, the Magis Eagles bowed to CEC, 52-59, in their first encounter last week.
The Dragons entered the second semifinal meeting with the momentum on its side and started out well with a 19-14 lead. However, CEC slowly faded and the tides turned with SHS-AdC up by four, 38-34, at halftime.
Offense
The Magis Eagles continued its offensive onslaught and capitalized on CEC’s sloppy plays with a 7-0 rally at the start of the third quarter for a 45-34 lead. Julius Cadavis dominated the paint, scoring nine points in the third quarter and helped keep SHS-AdC’s lead, 61-50, going into the final quarter.
Both teams traded baskets most of the fourth quarter, but with less than three minutes left in regulation, the defending champions started to rally, scoring nine unanswered points to trim down the lead to just four, 74-77. Cadavis and Dawn Ochea, two of SHS-AdC’s key big men, fouled out in the process.
Fouls
CEC committed two fouls in one possession and sent Maverick Suarez to the line. He split his free throw shots for a 78-74 advantage. CEC’s James Sumayang also shot one of two from the charity stripe to make it 75-78 with 37.4 seconds left. However, the Dragons made crucial mistakes offensively, which were capitalized on by SHS-AdC with free throws, sinking 4 out of 6, to seal its fate.
Jair Igna, who was a spark defensively and offensively, led SHS-AdC with 20 points, wherein six shots were from behind the arc. Cadavis added 18 points, while Suarez had 11.
CEC, on the other hand, was led by Marvin Bauya with 20, while Sumayang and Alfred Sedillo added 19 and 12 points, respectively.
SHS-AdC will be facing top seeded University of the Visayas Baby Green Lancers in the finals.
