Reyes can be given Catholic burial rights - CBCP

MANILA, Philippines - The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has clarified that the Church could give Catholic burial rites to the late former Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of Staff Angelo Reyes.

In an interview with Church-run Radyo Veritas, Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo Medroso, CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Canon chairman, said that despite Reyes taking his own life, which is a a mortal sin, the ex-military official was not in the right frame of mind during that time.

This was echoed by Antipolo Auxiliary Bishop Francisco de Leon. "Well sa Church teaching, yung suicide ay talagang kasalanan, pero dahil sa development doon sa mental health ngayon ay sinasabi ng Simbahan na mayroong mga situations o circumstances na ang tao ay hindi malaya sa pagpili ng kamatayan," de Leon added.

what's the difference between, ME, committed suicide (hung myself in a mango tree) to Reyes (killed himself through gun shot).. it's because "Reyes was not in the right frame of mind during that time?" and so I was?

The 1997 Catechism of the Catholic Church indicated that the person who committed suicide may not always be fully right in their mind; and thus not one-hundred-percent morally culpable: "Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide." The Catholic Church prays for those who have committed suicide, knowing that Christ shall judge the deceased fairly and justly. The Church also prays for the close relations of the deceased, that the loving and healing touch of God will comfort those torn apart by the impact of the suicide.

unlike private individuals, we have a choice whether to go corporate, be an entrepreneur or work for the government. the military or PMAers on the other hand, have no choice where or how to work. they are always under a politician, so they are at a higher risk to be corrupted compared to other careers.

Probably the most subtle way of putting it would be, he was driven by the system to corruption rather than sucked by the system to corruption.
i know people who works in the military and the public service.... to be upright is difficult but they have a choice... its either they leave the system... be sucked in the system or they just pretend they dont know anything...

in anycase, angelo reyes was at the top of the food chain.. he could have made a difference.... thats where lies the difference... he was not just any general nor officer... her was the chief of staff... he was the leader... he could have effect change but he took the path travelled by most... which in the end took his life...
