Mavericks' Brendan Haywood better, but Game 3 status uncertain
Mavericks backup center Brendan Haywood didn't practice Saturday and his status for Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night is uncertain. Haywood spent his practice time working on a stationary bike and doing some pool exercises while his teammates prepared for the Miami Heat.
Haywood strained his right hip flexor in Game 2 on Thursday night in Miami and left in the fourth quarter but never returned. Haywood said he was "way better" Saturday than two days earlier.
"Right now, we don't know," Haywood said. "It's one of those situations that you have to see how you feel on that day."
Haywood said that he strained his hip before the NBA Finals started and aggravated the injury in the first half of Game 2, saying "the wheels fell off."
"It really happened probably in the first half on a fast break," Haywood said. "I was chasing down the break, and I felt something kind of pull in my hip. In the fourth quarter, I tried to come back in and I kept feeling pops and pulls and I just knew I couldn't be out there. I couldn't move."
If Haywood can't go, starting center Tyson Chandler will play more minutes. Chandler said he knows how important it will be for him to stay out of foul trouble, something he's struggled to do at times this season. Also, 6-11 center Ian Mahinmi from France could see some playing time.
Mahinmi said Saturday that he's preparing as if he'll play more. After the team flew back from Miami on Friday, Mahinmi said he spent four extra hours in the gym to get himself ready mentally and physically.
On Saturday, Mahinmi said he was involved in practice much more than usual in an effort to be ready if he's needed more in Game 3.
"I was involved in every situation to make sure I know everything. And after I talk to you, I'm going to watch film and do everything I can do to make sure I'm prepared," Mahinmi said. "It's very exciting.
My role is not going to be anything crazy. It's not like my teammates expect me to come out and score 25 points and get 20 rebounds. My role is pretty easy. I don't want to put too much pressure on myself and know exactly what I want to do on the floor and be confident and have a lot of energy, play good defense, running the floor."
Mahinmi said he's had a similar injury like Haywood's before and it lingered, taking quite a while to get over.
"I've had that before, and it's never easy. It's a funny feeling. You feel it constantly when you raise your leg," Mahinmi said. "It's tough to deal with it. He's going to feel it."
