The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles are headed to the finals in the Passerelle division of the Cebu leg of the Milo BEST Twin Tournament for a fourth straight year.
- Cesafi scraps slam dunk competition from All Stars
- Milo BEST semis starts
- USC fends off CIT in Cesafi volley
- USJ-R rules tertiary division of Cesafi chess
- East stops west
This after the Magis blasted the University of San Carlos South, 88-39, in the semifinals over the weekend at the Cebu Eastern College gym.
The Magis Eagles, champions of the last three years, took a 40-17 halftime lead behind the efforts of Henry Asilum and RG Araw-Araw who combined for 18 in that stretch alone.
The lead was padded to 65-29 after three quarters with Reggie Abbu and Rebreb Diputado taking over, combining for 17 third period points as the writing was already on the wall for the struggling Southerners. Asilum had a game-high 19 points to lead the Magis Eagles. Ralf Camacho paced USC South with 10.
Meeting the Eagles in the finals for the third year in a row will be the USC North team after they outplayed the CEC Dragons, 69-57.
After cruising to a 34-22 halftime lead, the Baby Warriors somehow slowed down, allowing CEC to claw back to within eight, 55-47, after three periods.
USC North allowed CEC to rally for one last time, closing in to within six points, 60-54 with two minutes left. But an 8-0 run anchored on Benedict Aliser’s two triples doused off the CEC rally just as quickly.
Rey Arnejo led USC North with 16 points while Aliser had 11.
In the Passerelle B League, SHS-AdC-B overcame a tough USC South-B side, 53-38, to also make it to the finals. PAREF Springdale spoiled what could’ve been another SHS-AdC vs USC North championship face-off after scoring a thrilling 63-59 win over USC North-B.

CESAFI ALL STAR GAME
East stops west
By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News First Posted 08:48:00 09/21/2010 Filed Under: Basketball
The East squad went to their tried and tested core of players from the multi-titled University of the Visayas Green Lancers to nip their West counterparts, 70-67, in the All Star game of the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament last Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Just when things appeared bleak for the boys from the East, who trailed for all three periods and still had an 11-point deficit midway through the final stanza, head coach Gilbert Demape went to an all-green lineup composed of the core of the nine-time champions Green Lancers. The move worked wonders as it turned the East's fortunes around and culminated in game-winning baskets by Edrian Lao and Harold Cincoflores that spelled doom for the West.
The West came out firing on all cylinders as they zoomed ahead, 35-28, at halftimea and kept the lead at 48-47, heading into the last canto. A 10-2 run initiated by University of Cebu center Junemar Fajardo, University of San Carlos' Mark Panerio and Joven Cortes appeared to give control of the game to the West as it gave them a 60-49 advantage.
However, the East was not to be counted out just yet as Green Lancers Phil Mercader, Lao, Cincoflores and Ralf Olivares spearheaded a 14-0 blast that put them in the driver's seat, 63-60, with less than five minutes left in the match.
The East momentarily snatched the lead back with a basket from Southwestern University's Eleazer Armecin and a three-pointer from USC gunner Mike Cantonao but the West responded with aplomb as Phil Mercader completed a three-point play while Lao made another shot to put them ahead by three, 68-65. Armecin once again brought his team to within one but Cincoflores hammered the final nail in the West's coffin with a lay-in with 52.7 ticks left.
The West had a chance to tie the game but Cantonao missed a three-point attempt from the baseline as time expired.
Mercader topped the East with 14 points while Lao and Jerome Silva added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Fajardo and Cantonao paced the East with 10 points each. All five players were named to the Mythical Five All Star squad.
