Urges Bishop Pueblos to do something instead against alleged rampant illegalities in Caraga
by Ben Serrano – March 9, 2008
BUTUAN CITY- The Promotion of Church People’s Response (PCPR) criticized Butuan Bishop Juan De Dios Pueblos, D.D. for allegedly acting as President Arroyo’s spokesperson and apologist.
Other critics of the Butuan Bishop who figured in a controversy in 2005 for allegedly naming properties of then Urios College (now Fr. Saturnino Urios University) into his name, urged Bishop Pueblos to instead do something against rising illegalities in Caraga Region particularly in the wanton destruction of environment, illegal gambling and illegal drugs proliferation.
A group of students belonging to the Urios College Student Government and Faculty members held protest against Bishop Pueblos sometime in 2005 after the Bishop allegedly naming some properties of the school into his name.
The case was close after an investigation was made but results of the probe were not publicly disclosed with some members and officers of the Urios Student Council allegedly were kicked out.
Pueblos in his defense claimed he did not intentionally named the properties into his name and that he already returned said properties to the Diocesan-run Urios College.
In a statement sent to different media outlets through PCPR secretary general Arnie Dural, the group said Pueblos and a number of other Catholic Bishops were beginning to act like the Arroyo administration’s apologists.
“It appears that Malacañang’s Press Office has been extended to the offices of the most conservative Catholic Bishops”, the PCPR said, citing full page ad in a broadsheet that showed the bishops were supporting Arroyo administration amidst some Bishops opposing it.
In the ad, the bishops maintained that the CBCP’s call for “communal action” should not be interpreted as a call for another “People Power” revolution.
“Worse, sounding just like Arroyo’s press secretary and other avid defenders, Bishop Pueblos committed a grave act of conspiracy when he carelessly warned that Archbishop Angel Lagdameo faces ouster as CBCP head” the PCPR press statement said.
“The mandate of our Christian faith compels us to join the Filipino people in the quest for truth, justice, accountability and meaningful change. If Bishop Pueblos thinks that Archbishop Angel Lagdameo is under dangerous influence of Anti-Arroyo Bishops, we think he is the one in even more dangerous company of a syndicate government”, the PCPR press statement said.
It adds that, “Far from providing moral leadership for the people in Mindanao, it is deplorable that Bishop Pueblos chose to serve in the extended Malacañang Press Office whose job is to make the President look good behind outrageous cases of corruption and abuse of power”.
Aside from Bishop Pueblos, PCPR lashed out Archbishop Diosdado Talamayan of Northern Luzon and other Roman Catholic leaders for allegedly serving as apologists of the Arroyoa administration.
The strongly worded statement issued by PCPR against the Catholic Bishops came into wake even as groups or even some Bishops, priests opposed to the Arroyo administration started to shout ouster or resignation of President Arroyo due to charges of corruption.
Some Catholic priests and other religious ministers here who requested not to be named claimed it is impossible that everyone is happy of the CBCP’s official stand.
“Frankly there are some of us and other religious groups here who are unhappy with the CBCP’s official stand but we do not have choice”, some religious ministers and priests here said.

Reacting to statements of Butuan Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos during an Church-run radio station interview calling for Noynoy to resign since he is “not really worthy to be a president” adding that “he (Noynoy) does not plan, does not study, does not make his own decisions, and just lets his friends make the decisions for him. Poor Philippines. The job is not for him. The earlier he will be out of his post, the better for the Philippines.”

the gift was not just a gift after all
it was just a payment of the services rendered
