200 pounds beauty.. My wife is a gangster..
"yamato". a japanese film set during ww2
feel good underrated movie, prolly one of those cinematography films I admired:
- Tada, Kimi o Aishiteru
Some of my favorite movies from the last 3 years that I am highly recommending:
A Touch of Sin (Jia Zhangke, 2013)
Excellent Chinese master filmmaker's collection of interrelated stories (4 stories) about violence, based on true events that transpired in China. Derives its title from King Hu's classic Chinese martial arts movie "A Touch of Zen" (1971).
The Act of Killing (Joshua Oppenheimer, 2013)
Engrossing documentary on Indonesian killings in the mid 60s. Not by any definition a pure documentary but you will be hooked from start to end.
Leviathan (Andrei Zvyagintsev, 2014)
From actor-turned-director Andrei Zvyagintsev (director of The Return, Banishment, Elena) comes a story about a man in a Russian coastal town who's pushed to the brink of desolation by a corrupt official. Very well executed, wonderfully shot, and superbly acted.
Two Days, One Night (Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, 2014)
Marion Cotillard's winning turn as an emotionally unstable woman who struggles to secure her job within 2 days is featured in this latest from Belgian filmmakers The Dardenne Brothers who surprise with its clear-cut ending (?)
Winter Sleep (Nuri Bilge Ceylan, 2014)
Not for everybody. But if you like pensive Tarkovskian-like cinema of a Chekhovian story by way of a Berman-esque chamber drama then this is for you. Fantastic cinematography and stellar acting by the 3 main characters make Turkish director Ceylan's latest movie one of his best (Anatolia remains to be his all time high, imo).
Ida (Pawel Pawlikowski, 2013)
Another movie not for everybody because this is in black and white. But if you like beautiful black and white photography coupled with great acting by the 2 women and an engaging plot about a nun in Poland and her remaining relative who reveals a secret, then you have to watch this. (Other black and white recommendations: Tabu, Blancanieves, and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night)
These Japanese animated movies will re-affirm your belief that 2D animation is not dead, should never have to be obsolete (despite rumors of Studio Ghibli shutting down production), and has never been beautifully executed:
Wolf Children (Mamoru Hosoda, 2012)
Mamoru Hosoda (director of "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" and "Summer Wars") presents a family tale of survival in a complicated, unusual life when main character Hana falls in love with someone to turns out to be a werewolf. Beautifully rendered and well accomplished plot.
The Wind Rises (Hayao Miyazaki, 2013)
Miyazaki's swan song is a fitting last hurrah for an almost half-a-century career filled with colorful, imaginative, and powerful stories and characters that have inspired and influenced many movies, animation and live-action combined. From the first earthquake sequence up to the last waves of grass, you will be engaged, and Miyazaki will be greatly missed.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (Isao Takahata, 2013)
Isao Takahata's (director of "Grave of the Fireflies") latest film cannot be more beautifully rendered and profoundly concluded than what he, along with his animation team, has done with this coming of age tale based on a 10th century Japanese folklore. This needs to be seen by all anime fanatics. Hands down the best animated movie of the year.
Other recommendations:
Drug War (2012)
In The House (2012)
The Attack (2012)
