The apologies may not have done anything to better his team’s chances after the Philippine Basketball Association commissioner’s office suspended Norwood for Game Two in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup.
“We talked to him and he apologized to us," Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia said. “He told me it’s beyond his character to do such a thing. He said he was caught up in the heat of the moment. He felt he wasn’t getting any calls. Then he was slapped on the face by (Nelbert) Omolon.
“But he already understands the repercussions of what he did and why he’s sitting down."
But Rain or Shine’s woes don’t stop there. Sol Mercado’s penalty was upgraded to flagrant foul-2 by commissioner Sonny Barrios on Thursday, a violation similar to Norwood’s and one that necessitates a suspension.
To cushion the blow to embattled Rain or Shine, however, Mercado will serve his suspension on Game Three if the series is extended.
Garcia said he didn’t appeal Norwood’s case but only asked the commissioner’s office to also penalize Omolon who Norwood said slapped him in the face. Omolon was fined P1,000 for second motion.
Marlou Aquino, however, was suspended for one game after the Sta. Lucia center stuck a foot on Jayr Reyes in a Rain or Shine play.
Norwood and Aquino were fined P20,000. Joseph Yeo of Sta. Lucia (second motion) and Ryan Araña of Rain or Shine (leaving the bench) were slapped P10,000 penalties.
Sta. Lucia, the Philippine Cup defending champion, outclassed Rain or Shine, a postseason first-timer, 101-84 in Game One of a best-of-three quarterfinal series on Wednesday.
With only either Norwood or Mercado suiting up for the remainder of the series, Rain or Shine’s Cinderella season is in grave peril.
“It’s a big loss," Garcia added. “But we talked to the players. It’s clear to us now that we have to play a team game more than individually." – GMANews.TV
