    Can anyone recommend any good books for beginners?

    I recommend Sam's Teach Yourself Java in 21 days. Covers the basics, applets, jdbc as well.

    For the other topics mentioned in this thread it may help to make recommendations.

    Nice! Entity Bean is using a Active Record Pattern. While Message Bean is a Observer Pattern.
