Oh Please, so what? People who are "PROUD" of this so called "achievement" most likely has never been outside the country... In fact this is a reflection of how dirt poor this country is as most shops cannot survive if they are not clumped in one area. As what Vern said, Malls in developed countries are impractical considering there are shops everywhere in urban areas... With that being said, the largest mall here in East Asia is Hong Kong, if you guys get the point.... Shopaholic my butt, most Pinoys do not even buy anything significant when they are in the mall.... Buying a ballpen, a budget meal, or sleeping on the bench are not exactly called "shopping".

It may seem ironic however, no official records can quantify or even estimate our thriving underground economy which also fuels and feeds these huge shopping malls and a lot of other establishments in general.

Do you have any idea how much renting a FOOD CART at SM costs? If you do, you might want to reconsider what you said about "business not surviving if they are not clumped in one area". Also, if you had Macro Economics, you'll also know that buying a ballpen goes a long way in a country's economy.

And for the record, this country is not dirt poor. Relatively poor might be a good way to describe it.

    Amen to that

So much for the "crab mentality".

There is a lot of money being spent in the Philippines that wasn't earned in the Philippines. Perhaps that goes someway towards explaining why a country with such a high level of unemployment coupled with relatively low salaries can support such enormous retail outlets. Also I guess the outlay costs for developers are a fraction of what they would pay in the West.
