I like to liken eSports as the grass roots of technology and the digital culture. It is one way for the youth to be exposed to the digital culture with the hopes that they will embrace technology and use it one day to uplift their lives. True eSports, video games or even any sports and hobbies in general can have its negative impact. But I feel it is best that we provide guidance rather than shy away from it. Why? If we leave it alone on its own, eSports will continue to happen with or without our guidance and if you leave it to the capitalist world. Publishers or other entities will just take it upon themselves in a manner that will derive the most profit for them without relegating much to the positive aspects of gaming.
I for one can vouch that gaming has strong positive benefits that has made an important impact in my life. I am one of those who was into competitive gaming in the Starcraft Broodwar days. The discipline in training and the mental toughness you build up in having to compete long hours in stressful environments went a long way to helping me today be a competitive athlete in physical sports such as Ironman triathlon events where it's the mental toughness that allows me to place in the upper 10% of a 2,000+ participants. And it's the decision making and mental toughness that allows me to oversee multiple organizations some with over 600 employees under my responsibility. It has also given me aspirations to be able to dream of breaking a Guiness record and actually achieving it back in 2010. I can definitely say eSports has helped me with all of this.
With me perhaps being a parent sometime soon in the future. If you would ask me if I would steer clear my kids from eSports and gaming? Definitely not. I will nurture it and provide guidance to maximize on the positive benefits as a family and steer clear on the negative impacts rather than shun it and let them on their own. And that's what we want to do with PeSO and with these events.
Ok raman unta ni cya as long naa lang tarung na guidance ang mga anak from parents. So both sides if we nurture it into a gamer and with a proper guidance w/ the parents.
